Default Mirror Screw is stripped, what next?

Well I finally got the mirror off the door and wrestled with getting the mirror to attach to the base by way of the hollow bolt. Well I got it, but am kicking myself with what happens next.

I go to re-attach the base back to the car and must have inserted the allen bolt at and angle, now it seems the female catch inside the door is stripped. I am not pleased.

WTF do I do now with a stripped female catch inside the door.
Is there anyway to fix this? How do I get the mirror back on the door?

Banging my head..............can you hear it??? Ouch.

If you are talking about the female part it's shaped like a small brass barrel. You'll have to go into the door and replace that part.

THey can strip easily because they pivot slightly and can be cross threaded if you don't line up the bolt just right.

I may have one of these laying around I can send to you, I'll have to look around and get back to you.

jb weld and jus forgetaboutit.....just kidding. Sounds like something I'd do. Try boring out the brass insert and using a heli-coil replacement, altho don't know if you can get them that small..

I had the same thing happen on my driver side mirror years ago. I managed to saw off the stripped end, bring the threaded tube down a little further and reattach without having to take the whole thing apart and without damaging the wires. Probably dumb luck. 8 years later, the mirror is still attached to the car.

Parts outlay: $0
PITA: mild

Just re-read - not sure if we are talking about the same part. I am talking about the part that connects the flag to the base.

Dang, I'd thought that I was the only one to suffer from this problem! My buddy and I were fixing the same proble on my passenger door side-view mirror. It took an hour to try and wrestle the stubborn stiff-springed hollow nut back into the mirror housing. We then proceeded to tighten the 4-mm allen bolt back onto the door. The allen wrench stripped the head off the bolt. Argh!

I was actually going to write a similar post to ask about the need to take off the door panel. It looks like this thread answered my question.

Just curious.....after taking out the door panel.....will the door window glass prevent me from accessing the brass-barrel nut? Or do I also have to dismantle the door window glass?

It appears the wear problem is in the aluminum mirror pivot bracket. The female thread wears out, esp given it is under spring tension when assembled. There doesn't seems to be an easy fix for this.

My friends popped off while driving down to visit me. The keep him on the road, we just screwed in a self-tapper from the outside, into the pivot base. Doesn't look the best, but kept him on the road. And after leaving my house, the other mirror popped out too. Can you say duct tape? Time for new mirrors.
