I just bought 8 liters of Mobil 1, 5/50. Will that oil work out for my S4?

Disregarding all other pro's and con's in this thread, Mobil1 5W50 is on the Porsche approved oils list. However, for temperature below -25C in winter Porsche approves only 0WXX.

I use the M1 15-50 'EP' also and it is not what you find at WalMart, at least not in these parts. There is a big difference between the M1 15-50 and
M1 15-50 EP and it is not easy to find.

That is part of this discussion. The previous reson for not using the "new" Mobil 1 was the lack or low level of ZDDP.
The documents Bill posted says otherwise.

So what other differences are there?

One has EP on the bottle and the other doesn't

At the beginning of the year I read up on all of this and thought I had made a fairly educated decision on what oil to run. Now, government meddling, new data and more confusion, yeah!

I always used Valvoline VR-1 racing 20-50 in my 951 and if 20-50 is good for the 928 It looks like I will continue. Never had any issues with it.

I can't find non-EP 15w50, never seen it and only recently did I learn it existed, but then, I haven't been to Wal Mart to look.

My GTS engine eats a lot of oil (not sure whether valve seals or just worse than typical breather ingestion) so none of it would be in there anywhere close to 15k miles, I'd rather reduce the cost.

Go back and look at this table:
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...duct_Guide.pdf

There are two pages. The first shows M1 15W/50. The second page shows M1 15W/50 EP. They have the same {zinc} phosphorus.

It's not clear to me what the difference is between M1 and M1 EP other than Mobil guarantees the EP for 15K mile/1 year oil change intervals.

Shane:

The GTS engines use oil because Porsche/Mahle forgot to drill the oil return holes into the pistons. The rings can't deal with the excess oil, thus the engines use oil and the oil reduces the effective octane available, making the GTS engines ping, especially in hot weather. This can be fixed, when the engine gets rebuilt....we've fixed many.

Note that we virtually "cured" this, when we changed a couple of engines over to Torco. I'd sure like to get some more data/testing on this. How about an experiment? I'll send you some Torco and you try it and relay the results?

Greg,I seen somewhere else about the 93 GTS using more oil and later models not as bad.Is this on all GTS 1993-95?

Mark:

It's true, as far as I know. I've taken apart engines from all the different years and every engine that I've seen has the same issues. I have not taken apart any of the "late replacement" engines, so I don't know if Porsche found the problem and corrected it or not. There was never a technical bulletin on the subject, so I assume that they did not find the problem.

The high mileage low ZDDP oils from Mobil 1 have the SM rating along with GF-4. 15w-50 doesn't have the GF-4 rating.

To add to the confusion is this bit from the API website on diesel certificaton for GF-4, not sure how this applies to gas engines:
Hacker, that was my speculation but I was wrong-- both SM and GF-4 limit ZDDP, but only for oils in the 0-30W range.

Here's what I learned after actually reading those specs: https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...2&postcount=77
