Wal-Mart sells the cheapest mobil 1 oil. My dad has run mobil 1 since he bought his 928 in 1979. He has 370,000 miles on it, including autocross', track days and as a DD for almost 20 years. Never has opened the cam covers or had to get into the block yet.

Yes, Rotella is rated for diesel use, but it's rating is good for the 928 engine.

Search for Doug Hilary's posts.

Silly me, I thought the search I posted above would survive and work when clicked on.

Here are links to Doug's oil dissertations.

Well, I run a Castrol Magnatec GTX 5w-40 in my -86 32v. Is that to be consider as a too thin oil then?

I live in Sweden thou and the temperature never exceed about 30-32°C at the most in the summer. By the winter the temperature can fall down to 15-20°C in the worst conditions but I rarely use the car at the winter anyway.

Will I face an engine rebuild by using this viscosity?

What would preferred oilpressure be during workingtemperature?

Best regards

/Tobias

I would consider it too thin... you probably use more oil than you should and perhaps the oil pressure is a bit low at hot idle... preferably you are above 2Bar at hot idle and 5Bar or 'pegged' above 1500Rpm or so...

The PO of my car ran M1 5W50, and I found myself inexplicably consuming oil... + it looks really thin when hot... + hot idle would drop to 1.5Bar...

I switched to Valvoline VR1 20W50 and haven't had any problems so far... still uses some oil, but not as much... (hot idle 2.5Bar)
I don't drive the car at all during winter, therefore I'm not concerned about the cold viscosity.

I have considered to use Castrol Edge Sport 10W60... but it's mega pricey, it'll set you back about 1400SEK (around 230USD) for an oil change and a bit left for top-ups!!

In the right climate I would not consider 5w-40 "too thin".

I know one 928 using 10w30 in Chicago. He's far from a noob (he's well known here, just doesn't post anymore). As long as your oil pressure is good and lifters are not banging themselves out of the motor.....

My previous neighbor has always used 10w-40 in his 84. Depends a lot on the car. I tried 5w-40 Delvac in my 81, on a hot July day my lifters were clacking away and my oil pressure was low. So I switched back. Other people (like Doug Hillary) run fine with 5w-40.

Yeah, very true... if your pressure is within spec and all sounds well... then it obviously works for you.

I would also say it depends a lot on how you drive!! I only ever see 2.5Bar after extended periods of driving or VERY vigorous driving...(thrashings)... after a lap of Nurburgring I have seen 2Bar (approx 28degC day).

In normal driving around town I will usually see 3.5Bar hot idle... So I could probably run xxW40 in my car too without any problems... and without any fun.

Shell Rotella T Syn 5-40 (CI-4/SL), ¼ over the fill line, only.

Heavy oil = less horsepower, more heat.

My experience mirrors Hacker's with the Shell ROtella Delvac 5W-40. It got very thin on a hot summer day and could not get above 3.5bar at 5k RPM.

I just came from the dyno. Oil temp got to 220F and seriously, i would just get the revs to 2000 and it was a solid 5 bar. Its what i see at the track too.

I really hate to get in to the Amsoil versus Mobil 1 fray, but I've been using Mobile 1 since I bought my '94 GTS 5 years ago. Now with 150,000 miles, I've been seeing oil pressure at a hot idle here this summer of 1.5 to 2.0 bar and 4.5 bar above 2000 RPM.

When I've been doing stop and go errand running the last couple of weeks, I've seen the RED Low Oil Pressure Warning on the digital dash at initial startup. Scares the @$%@#$ out of me. Also had this at the Parade autocross in Charlotte on July 2nd.

I'm tempted to try Amsoil 20w-50, just to see if it makes a difference. I don't drive the car everyday (it may sit for several days at a time), and I'd like to get a lot more miles out of her.

Yesterday, it took around 5 minutes for the lifter noise to go away, after the car sat for 5 days.

How is the zinc content in Amsoil?

What weight mobil 1 are you using?

As for the zinc content, Amsoil makes more then one product line, so it depends on which one you are talking about. If it has an SM rating it shouldn't have more / less ZDDP then any other SM rated oil including Mobil 1.
If this is a concern to you, look for an SL or SJ rated oil. Problem is most if not all oil's on the shelf will be SM by now. Unless you have a store locally that carries more speciality oil's. You can always just add a bottle of STP (blue or red bottle) to your engine with every oil change. It's simply a thick oil with a high level of ZDDP.
Others have switched to diesel oil that is also gas safe since these are similar to the "old" standard. I tried this but Delvak is only available in 5w-40 and my engine did not like that weight.
Another option is air cooled motorcycle oil where ZDDP is really important.
