The TB in our cars is one of, if not the longest of any car. It wraps around everything under the hood and back. That much chain flapping around under there would be scary and probably impossible to implement. It would definitely be cost prohibitive.

I wonder if it would be possible to do a gear-drive system instead of the timing belt... would probably work a lot better than a chain drive. Maybe mount a series of gears on a billet track bolted to the old idler mounting points. Probably a bad idea but just brainstorming here.

Gears and chains BOTH need to be lubricated that is a huge challenge trying to keep the oil in....and gears make noise and on and on....

uh yeah,
JUST STICK WITH THE BELT!
The belt has many advantages over the chain as well. Durability or longevity is not one of them, but just about everything else is.

chain drive could be done, but gear drive is better---no chain tensioner needed, just gear to gear. lubrication is no big deal, just a matter of seals on the cams, block, gear housings, etc.....noise could be lessened, but in a race motor, who cares?
it's been done before......(expensively)

100 race days, no oil in the tensioner, but checked periodically. Its race proven and works as good as any other method out there.
I think we have something that works pretty well. plus, it is a very efficient way to drive the pulleys.

If the Risky Business parking lot scene had been as good as that you tube video Fabio put up the 928 would have been a lot more popular IMO.
I blame Tom Cruise.

I took a casual look at the rules for a drifting event at one time, just for kicks. One of the requirements(for that event at least) was either LSD or welded/locked spider gears.
Welding the spider gears would make the car just about useless for driving in the twisties, and it really cracks me up how some "driftaz" still think that the fastest way around a corner is to drift.
Having said that, there's quite a bit of skill involved drifting on a tight course. Much respect to the guys who do it well, but people like that guy in the vid above who call random burnouts/donuts in a wide-open parking lot "drifting" tend to turn the sport into a bad joke IMHO.

Any sport where the winner is decided by judges has it's own set of problems... much like figure skating and dog shows , lots of politics.
