Drifting Competition - Anyone want to enter a 928?
Went to Formula Drift Pro drifting event this past weekend at Englishtown Raceway Park in NJ. Unbelievable car control, the head to head matches were unbelievable.
Most were Japanese imports, one 650HP Porsche 993TT, one Vette with supercharged big block, Nissan 350Z with Titan V8 stuffed in it, one Pontiac Solstice with a V8 and a Viper.
Got a lot of thumbs up for the 928 as I was driving in and leaving, heard some comments like...whoa a 928 cool, I didn't know that was a Porsche... the car still commands a lot of respect.
I posted the pics on Picassa Web, take a look

While watching, was wondering, wouldn't the 928 be a great car to set up for drifting, probably wouldn't take much.

I'm no drift pro... But isn't the 928 too heavy on the rear? I was sure that to drift correctly, you needed a car with a big unbalance with the weight to the front. Porsche balanced the 928 like maniac...
So dunno.
I will leave pro answer that.

Seems like an even balance with tons of power on tap with good throttle response so you can slip from traction to losing traction smoothly would be best...which the 928 has.
Don't really know though, I've never got mine to break loose on pavement except in a straight line...

I know that the 928 would make a fine drifting car. But I have found that unlike alot of other cars, they regain grip too damn fast for alot of corners.

There was a kid on Myspace's Porsche group that bought a 928 for drifting. When he started to mention the mods he was doing to the car I knew he was going to FAIL.
The one that caught my laugh was his removing of the timing belt and putting a solid chain on instead.

There is one with a Twin Turbo GT engine coming along in Norway: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ighlight=drift
It's been some time since the last update, but here is a video of the first startup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQtr4DD4QE8

That guy hates his tires. Couldn't maintain a drift either, he kept losing it and having to start over. I don't drift and think it's borderline car abuse, but I can appreciate that if you're going to do it, the point is CONTROL, not just spinning the wheels.

When I got my 928 and brought it to work, a young Asian male (i.e., natural drifting enthusiast) I work with saw and the first thing he said was, "Hey you could drift that!"
I saw an introductory program on TV about drifting, and they said the key to drifting was in the suspension (coil-overs) and the tires. You could always find a tire that lets a 928 cut loose and stay loose.
