Excellence does it to us again!
Just got my issue of Excellence today. The cover artical says "10 Porsches to Collect Today From $8,000 to $450,000" As expected they say all sorts of 911's are "collectable jewels" but to rate a 1973-74 914 2.0 and not even mention a 928S, GT or GTS? Given the performance vs. prices our cars go for I just don't get it! A lot of the hot cars out now are built on the GT platform (Astons, Maserati, Ferrari). Why cant they just adimt 928's were way ahead of their time. A 914, No offence but I dont see it?!!???

You have never owned a 914 then. They are a blast. Had a 73 914 2.0 and was an amazing car.
They fell apart quite quickly so as a collectible I would say yes. They are hard to find in useful condition.

I opened the magazine fully expecting to see one example of the 928 listed as a car that was undervalued. But instead we see 9 variations of the 911. Come on, be a little more inclusive of some of the other great cars in Porsches history.

Honestly, I like it that most of the "porsche" crowd barely knows the 928 exists.
I didn't buy the thing to be with the "in" crowd, and the fact that 928's are pretty well built but not in vogue means they're pretty affordable to acquire so you can feel good about driving them instead of keeping them in an inflatable bubble and just talking about what a cool car you have.

How many 911's have been built since mid 1964? Several hundred thousand? There's a 20 fold range of values aross the model run, from Carrera RS's all the way down to rusty late '70's 2.7L cars with bad head studs. What makes the valuable ones valuable is (relative) scarcity, desireable performance bits and/or special editions. So their list makes perfect sense. One could put together a list of the top potential 928 collector cars too. Let's use the term 'collector' loosely, in the sense that at this point in time, in the worst case the car is at least flat on its depreciation curve......
My list, in no particular order:
1988 Clubsport, with an EPA exemption to avoid massacring it for federalization (2 in the US?)
1995 5-speed GTS, Cobalt Blue, of course. (how many- 2? 3?)
An unmolested 1985S Euro S, with your favorite options (or lack thereof) (few in the US?)
1989 GT with 311 miles on it. (what, ~100 89 GT's?
1982 Weissach with full luggage, in time capsule conditon. (205 made)
Froggy, or any of the first few '78's.
1988 928SE, for hot/muggy days.
What else am I missing?
Oh, and +1 on giving a whit about whether anyone else thinks 928's are cool/prestigious/whatever. In the OC, my 928GT is the cheapest car in most parking lots. All I know is they're all missing out. Too bad.....

No disrespect intended to a 914s. In my youth I had a 71 240Z, my buddy had a 2.0 914 and I drove it to death! I admit, it was fun (not as much fun as my Z) but really....not to mention 928s at all is a crime!

I wouldn't take it as an attack on 928s. All the 928 articles I have read in Excellence have been positive.
BTW, by being a 928 owner who doesn't subscribe, you are screwing up the demographic. GT Purely Porsche has become much more 928 friendly just because 928 owners take an interest in what they say.
Why not jot down a letter to Excellence extolling the virtues of the GT or GTS ? You might find yourself in print, giving the 928 a thumbs up.

Somehow I know this may come back to bite me but I've been to a few events where 911's and 928's are present and the general public seems to be more attracted to the 928 over the 911 (with exception to maybe the 993). I've seen this many times over the past couple of years.
As others have mentioned, most don't have a clue that the 928 is a Porsche and you rarely see them on the road. Most also assume that theirs and air cooled engine in the back, even some car enthusiasts.

The quote below is from the Porsche newsletter I get on occasion. Even Porsche thinks is a collectable.
The 928 GTS, which provided the ‘Gran Turismon ideal’, commenced its final year of production in autumn 1994. No technical modifications were announced in the car that former Formula 1 world champion, Jacky Stewart, considered to be the "best high-speed sports car in the world."
Readers of the German car magazine, auto motor und sport, learned with regret that production would come to a halt in the summer. "In 45 years of driving, I have never driven a car that was as close to perfection as the 928 GTS was," wrote one man from Berlin. "It was the best Porsche ever," commented another reader in Munich. There was almost unanimous agreement on the characterisation of the 928: "The best option for people who want to drive a car that is not a pure-bred sports car or a limousine."
Many of the 61,056 928 models built are still on the road today and its status as a collector's car has been secured.
