Not a big deal. One guy's opinion. Anyone that wants to collect 928s can do so without needing to seek approval from any particular magazine.

The problem here is not with Excellence Magazine. In fact, they probably have the finest publication out there, and they do write articles about the beloved 928. They give updated pricing on our cars every year and they write about people in the 928 community (Louie Ott, the most recent), and our cars. For those who are bashing this publication...are you nuts! Are you going to start one that writes exclusively about the 928. It's been tried and it didn't fly. Just asked those who did; it's hard, hard work, and they did a fine job, too. But fact is, not enough people (928 owners) subscribed to make it succeed. You have to appeal to a broader base, and talking to the whole Porsche community is what makes it work, and I think it works extremely well.
Having owned two 928's and two 911's and a 944S, I get real tired of the, "poor me", syndrome from some of the 928'ers out there. Is the 928 a collectable? Possibly some will be, and more likely, most will not. But the point of the matter is, we all love our 928's; let that be enough. The people in this small community are some of the best I have ever been aquainted with. If for no other reason, I would keep my car just for the camaraderie of like thinking individuals. For those who think that the entire 911 community is against us...BS! If you want to help make the 928 the true ambassador of the Porsche marquee then we all have to be better than the few who make comments about the 928. Cancelling your subscriptions to Excellence Magazine is not the answer. I would bet if more of the 928 community subscribed to it, and let them know about your allegiance, the better the chance of having more acticles written. Send them story ideas that are important to you. Look at all the events that are put on all over the county that are 928 exclusive...what a great story that would be. All anyone has to do is look at the threads that are pinned to the top of this forum.
Okay, I'll get off my soap box after one more comment. I just get bent when some here feel threaten that there favorite car isn't at the top of every list. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the world, and the world ain't fair. Its just how it is. But if you really want to help, do something about it, just don't sit there at your computer, make a plan, take action, and just do it. Talk is cheap!

Collectible is distinct from desirable. To me, collectible implies "good investment".

With anything collectible, by the time you hear that it's "collectible", it's too late to actually collect it. By the time you hear about it, the price has already been adjusted so that you're not likely to make much money collecting it. You have to get lucky buying it when it's not in vogue, and selling when it's hot.

Collect what pleases you. I'm ecstatic that the 928 isn't collectible so that I can afford to own and drive one whenever I want for about 10% of what I would have paid for it new. And it's still one of the very best "GT Touring" cars available at any price.

I subscribe to excellence and will subscribe here. I understand that we can't (and shouldn't) be in every issue but I've had my subscription for 4 years and except for the market updates can count the number of 928 pieces I've seen on less than one hand. I also understand market economics and know they would die a slow death catering to 928 owners.
I don't think any one is complaining that the car is not on the top of some magazine's list but rather it seem to some, the car does not exist at all. As far as doing somgthing to further the marque, I think this board does alot to support our cars and its members( as a newbie I've learned the most from this board), mostly because they have to. With out it I don't know where 928s would be.
In the end I must agree it really does not matter what others think of the cars. I love my 928 and in the future will probably buy something else somebody won't like. I guess I just prefer the ecclectic.

I really wish that all the people who think of a 928 as big , fat , lazy , touring car ,Gran Tourismo, would take it out on a Drivers Education track day ....you would learn that it is one fine SPORTS CAR . No need to apologize that it is NOT uncivilized and uncomfortable. The 997 variant of the 911 series is basically the SAME SIZE !! I too would second the comment about who cares what other people think about the car or what it might be worth someday. Drive it , enjoy it for what it is one great SPORTSCAR . If I had only bought that Allard 30 years ago for $5,500 or not sold the XKEs or married the second wife. I do rather like the 3rd one however.

I think excellence is good magazine. Granted they are for the most part all about 911's but there will occasionally be something about some front engine porsche in there. I don't now of too many Porsche Specific magazines but Excellence and Panorama. From what I have read its a good magazine. Maybe thats just me.

Its a bummer 928's weren't mentioned in that article....but then again there weren't any water cooled Porsches of any sort in that article either....

Grand Touring car...sports car...race car....whatever....the 928 still holds it own today quite nicely....ask any of the people that race against Kibort, Anderson, Tim & Cheryl, George, etc if they think the 928 is "fat and lazy?" (NOTE I intentionally didn't include Jim and his "turbo" 928, since its special! :>)

Hmmmn, my "using" rennlist doesn't contribute wear to something someone else might buy and, generally, I'm only on the boards for work purposes (because I eat, sleep, and drink Porsche already...). If I were to "subscribe" to all of the boards I visit (or am pointed to by contributors), it would be a pretty hefty bill given my minimal usage.

Perhaps one other minor difference is I don't "use" the boards for free and then criticize them? I'm a guest, and try to act like one. After all, I'm not paying to be here. Were I required to, I'm not sure I would be (given the above), which, I suspect, I'm not alone in. To rennlist, and those who support it, I say THANK YOU.

So I dunno, but your question is totally fair -- and I'm not sure I've got the right answer.

By calling it a GT Touring car I didn't mean to imply fat and lazy. Maybe GT has too many bad connotations. I meant a car you can drive ridiculously fast all day long and still have a big grin on your face at the end of the day.

As a racing platform, I think the 928 is awesome.

I do not need a magazine article to tell me what I like for me to collect something... I've managed to collect four 928s since my first purchase in '99, and this summer I'll be expanding my shop to house them more comfortably, and perhaps get a fifth one past the wife...

I do not think I've ever read Excellence, I might have had I not found rennlist first!

FYI...I do buy the issues with 928 market updates.

Dave and Erik got it right. Who gives a ****?

I can say that my car(s) get more attention than I would prefer at times. I don't need a magazine to tell me if my car is worth a damn. Just shut up and drive.

Plain and simple. Jim Schrager has never owned a 928. Until 2004, I don't think he even knew there was a single timing belt.

And the thinly veiled reasoning that we should stick with Excellence to try to change the content "from within" is specious.

Yeah, the 959 is really relevant in the "undervalued" segment.

I'm letting my subscription run out unless we see some major content in the 928 direction before it runs. Either that or I'll tear out the next 9ff article and repeatedly paper cut my wrists. Geesh.
