Default Port and Polish Intake for better performance

Hey guys, Ive got an 87 S4 wanted to get more performance. I was recommended to port and polish the intake and exhaust. We found out they used abrasive material to do it like gritty sand. So I got with my friend that tunes Hondas and we decided to try it ourselves. We got a bag of sandblasting sand and hooked up into the intake and started the car. We had to hold the gas so it would run. He wanted to let the engine suck in the sand through the intake so it would port it out and then push it out the ehxaust so it would port the exhaust manifold.
I was worried that it might cause problems but he figured it'd be OK as long as we didn't make boost and it get sucked in the Super Charger. After running the car and letting it suck in sand we got about half way through a 25 lb bag. The check engine light was on and the engine was bucking and kicking and sounding really weird. We stopped and hooked the car back up normal and took off the sand supply. We tried to start it again and it was really hard. Once started it couldn't idle and kept making weird noises. We took it out and drove it and it started to make scraping and knocking noises.
Help! Can anyone tell me what to do! My buddy only does Hondas so he doesn't know much about Porsche's.

I am getting ready to head to SITM and need to get it fixed fast any ideas?

It's not April 1 is it?

If you are actually serious (you can't be!)..................get ready to write a pretty big check before you are going to drive that car again.

It's the same as with Hondas. After you run the sand through the engine, you just need to hook up some carb cleaner to the intake and let it run for about 5 mins. It's usually a good idea to change the oil after you're done.

What kind of carb cleaner do you think would work best?

Forgot to mention that you need to use the liquid kind that comes in a paint can, not the aerosol spray, and not the one you add to the gas tank.

Right now I'm using Gunk because I couldn't find Berryman's. If you can get a 5 gal can, hook that up and run it through. If you can only get a 1 gal can, put an empty bucket under your exhaust pipe to collect the used cleaner, then run through again, 5 times.

By the way, don't smoke while you do this.

Could be an aftermarket check engine light

Cliff, maybe you should run a few dollops of valve grinding paste through the inlet, just to finish the job off properly?

You have to let the sand out the bottom - thats the important step every noob forgets.

You get most of the sand out when you do the oil change. (I like to leave a little in to polish the rods and mains) If you don't do the oil change though, you definitely need to let the sand out the bottom. The bearings can go out of tolerance if you polish too far.

I used polishing sand with Close Up for a clean bright finish.

I hear sugar works quite well too as a fuel line cleaner.

Cliff, sounds as though you've been most thorough and diligent with this top end job. Maybe all that's left to do is adjust the valve clearances by taping the camshafts with a ball peen hammer. That should quieten down the engine very considerably and you won't even be able to hear it running.

Cliff is obviously suffering from restless right leg syndrome. All work and no play make you go pretty nuts. Lets hope a SITM retreat with his own kind will help.
