Default Stubborn oil filter

I installed this oil filter myself, hand tight only, a year and 1500 miles ago.

I'm glad I've got a pit to work in so I could use a 3' long by 1/2" diameter steel rod drilled through the filter to wrench it off!

Why can't things just be easy?

BTDT, several filter wrenches and no luck. A nice long screw driver works great sometimes.

I happen to have one of these. Luckily the filter is just long enough. I still had to clean the filter and the strap off w/thinner to make it grip.

I tried both rubber strap wrenches that I have first - not even close. Bought a set of oil filter pliers and tore up the end of the filter with that. Bought a very high quality metal strap wrench just the right size and that just bent and mangled the filter even more. Drilled a hole and stuck my longest screw driver through and that started to tear the sides apart. The last resort was the 3' long metal rod drilled all the way through and luckily that finally did it, but it wasn't easy!

I can imagine that it was not a clean job either.

I just barely got mine off, it was starting to mash the filter. I have one of those cup style socket thingies that my ratchet fits in; it was for my Jeep. Anyone have any experience w/these?

Greg next time dont drink any coffee before you install the filter and put a dab of fresh oil on the rubber seal, once the filter contacts the block turn it no more than 1 full turn possibly less by hand of course.
I would also suggest that you go to Autozone with a new filter and get the filter removal tool, this fits over the end of the filter and connects to your 3/8 ratchet it seems to apply the most torque without damage to the filter, Goodluck, Stan

Greg I wish I had a garage like yours to work in, miss hanging around that place listening to the awesome speakers and working on the cars.

Back on topic, anyone use the metal end caps you can connect to a socket wrench to wrench of the filters?
