Dammit.

Wait, that's not a handgun---nevermind...
Speaking of an AR or M-16, I just got back from dropping off some castings at the Machine shop I use. They recently were awarded a 67 million dollar military contract to make the M-16 carrier bolts. They have an entire area devoted to manufacturing these. Here is a quick pic (sorry crappy phone pic) of some of the freshly machined carrier bolts in their special packaging... cool stuff !!

I would hazard a guess that the UK has less than 100 gun related deaths per year compared to the US being somewhere over 15000. Japan and Canada rank very low in deaths as well for their population. These numbers are just a guess from a report I read several years back. They could be worse either way.

But how many deaths by stabbing?

I think that it's good that we didn't wait for the queen to give us our freedom!

I have a very personal insight on this question. I was born in Montreal where even the cops can't carry their guns when not in service. The very truth of it is that only criminals end up with guns.
I was held up twice in Montreal, the last times, I had gun in my face and had to remain still with my wife, while the other guys was going through my stuff, taking what he liked. We were lucky in that they were only interested in money and jewelry, but if any one of them had tried something with my wife, I would probably be dead today.

At least now, if someone breaks in, I have a fighting chance. And most crooks know it.
I only carry to and from the shooting range, but if the economy keeps going like it is, violent crimes against the person will skyrocket, and the need to protect ourselves more of a necessity.

I choose to own a gun and made it a priority that both my wife and I get proficient with it.

To each his own

Funny story....I was at the PartsHeaven PCA concours with Brian. The judge comes over to his 928 and starts poking around. He opens the door compartment, and there's Brian's handgun just sitting in there. The judge just kinda stops in his tracks, doesn't know what to do....Brian had forgotten to remove it before judging began, so he pulls it out and says "It's OK, I'm a cop." After all that, Brian only placed 2nd overall.

The door compartments are pretty large, and could fit full size handguns, but it's on your left hand side and covered by a door. Pretty bad access. Assuming your right handed, I would look for a place on the right hand side to mount a holster. In just about every car or truck there is a easy, recessed yet still accessable, place to mount one. Then when you get into your car, you remove you're firearm from your holster (body) and place it in the one you have in each car.

As far as the gun, it's very personal. Shoot a lot of guns and see what you like. I carry a H&K USP .45ACP Compact Tactical most of the time, or a J frame Smith and Wesson when in dress clothing.

Having an extra high cap mag in the car is nice too. Although probably never neccessary, it's not like they take up a lot of room either.

My Springfield XD .45 fits in the door, and My Colt .45 Officer's model fits nice between the seat and console. The S&W Airweight fits well on the shelf under the steering collum.

I know a few folks who regularly hunt wild boar with hand guns. That said, not one of them stows the piece in a 928 door compartment...

Laid against, or velcroed to, the right side of the TT tunnel is both readily, easily accessible and discreet in both placement and retrieval.

Shoulder launched weapons like an RPG, laid in the back seat can be handy as well.

Then you can tell the other guy, " Who brings a pistol to an RPG fight?"
