Dextron VI Synthetic ATF and the Automatic Transmission
I was in Kragen today looking for Dextron III Synthetic ATF for the 928. They had Mobil 1 Mercon V Synthetic. I'm not sure if this is the right Mobil 1 ATF for our auto trannies.
I asked the guy if he had anything in Dextron III Synthetics and he said that they have Valvoline Dextron VI. I looked at the back of it and it says that it "can be used on transmissions that require Dextron-II , Dextron-III."
Does anyone have any experience with Dextron-VI in their cars? I'd like to get some of it tomorrow if it's compatible with our automatic transmissions.

The Mobil 1 Mercon V is fine for cars using Dexron III.

Dexron VI appears to be backwards compatible too.

I just use M1 synthetic ATF, the one you found. It's the only Mobil synthetic. The rest are blends.
Have you moved here yet?

Good to know about Mercon V! The Valvoline Dextron VI is fully synthetic also. I take it that it can be used still with our transmissions without destroying it?
Unfortunately, I haven't moved up there yet. I'm still working that out with another employer

Link to the Valvoline Dextron VI Synthetic ATF:

I can't see how this would be bad to use in the transmission.

Redline is a premium ATF from what I have heard.
I'm going to use the Valvoline Dextron VI and post my results and how the transmission is functioning after my service.

I'm confused but after reading the manual it is very specific.
The following are NOT suitable:
Dexron II, IIc, IId Type a Suffix A
Since this is old info will the mobile one synthetic work it says good for:
Mercedes 236. 1-.9.

Tampa: I assume this for the 82. Porsche continued to use Dexron B until MY87 when they switched to Dexron IID. Not all Dexron IID had the formulation Porche approved and none of the earlier Dexron II's were considered suitable. Dexron III-VI has superceded Dexron IID. Mobil 1 or the other alternatives mentioned should be fine.

Valvoline makes few if any true synthetic products. IIRC, their Dexron 'synthetic' is petrol based. Not that it's bad, but make sure you don't pay premium prices for it. Dexron I, II, III, IV, V are all backward compatible.

If it makes a difference its for an 85 4-Speed. Mobile one is about $10.00 a quart x 2.5 Gallons = a whole lot of $$$$$. I know the fluid has been changed on this car but I hope they used the correct fluid, after reading the manual it concerns me. It shifts hard at times but that maybe normal I need to check the adjustments. I did find the fluid a little low seems like a small leak on the plastic compression nut on the tank and a leaking hose off of the radiator.

M1 is $10/qt? Wow. I paid just under $7 last time. FWIW, my next fluid change is going to be Chevron MD-3, picked up at Costco by the case. It's Dexron-III. A number of vendors are using the designation MD-3 now or some are using just ATF with details in the small print. GM has moved the Dexron line over to Dexron-VI and ended the licensing of Dexron-III. Dexron-III is still out there but is not called that anymore.
Here's a relevant notice from GM.

Now, since the Dexron-III licensing and certification testing has ended, there could be some concern that what's being called Dexron-III compatible is really that. I think staying with Big Oil alleviates that concern for me.
