So how do the controls work? Is that a hand brake?

The hand control is to the left of the steering wheel and you push it forward towards the firewall to apply the brakes and it pulls downward in an arc which turns a gear which pushes on a rod connected to the gas peddle to make it go.

It is the regular Monarch MPS Mk IV hand control. I use the same one on my daily driver.

Mark, I would LOVE to get it back out to CA sometime. Maybe I will be able to make that happen...

Glad you guys were able to view the slide show and that you enjoyed it. It was really a big long job and I am glad it is done! Well, it is a race car so it is really never done! LOL! I do need to do a few little things to it so I can drive it on a regular basis and not have to worry about it.

Sean,

Thanks for posting that! AWESOME! That was the best the car ever looked right there. It needs some wax now and I have some pretty big road (well, track) rash on the front and just forward of the front wheels. Heck it is a race car! I don't worry about it. I like for it to look good, but I am NOT going to fret over it.

It does sound AWESOME! Everyone at the track LOVES to hear that car out there.

Be cool!

That is very cool. You would have gotten a kick out of Carol Hollfelder's hand control system on her ferrari, and later very fast Mustang! It had paddle shifting, (very high tech on the ferrari, and a ford effort on the mustang) and i think the gas was a ring around the steering wheel that she pulled back and then would push the steering wheel in for braking.

some amazing technology on carol's car. And, in the last season she competed in this car, she was pretty fast too! I think she clicked off a 1:33 or something at Road Atlanta!

Looks kind of scary, but if you think about it (for me at least) im still much more comfortable with the hand controls on a motorcycle than I am on the car.
So, i guess you could get used to it and maybe get real good at it too! How is it for you?

Com'mon out! Love to have you at laguna with us sometime!

Hopefully, I can see this very cool 928 race car in person someday.

Mark, that system looks similar to the one below, named the "Guidosimplex" system. Co-designed by ex F1 driver, Clay Regazzoni, who was paralyzed in a crash in the 1980 US Grand Prix at Long Beach.

Regazzoni had those hand controls in his metallic green Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe too.

That is not exactly the same system that Carol used but close. That is an older system. The newest version of the system used very high powered motors to push on the brakes (think about how hard you have to push w/ your leg on the pedal) and gas.

The sensors were adjustable so that if you did not have a lot of hand or arm strength you could still actuate the brakes fully by adjusting the sensor. Very cool! VERY EXPENSIVE! They tried selling the system here in the states but sold VERY FEW of them. It think the cost (uninstalled) was nearly $10k!! YEOW!

Now that I look at that pic again it might be the regular system w/ a pedal for the clutch so you can drive a standard, but I don't think so...kind of hard to tell...

My system works fine for me and is VERY simple and effective! Really nothing to break with it so that is a VERY GOOD THING!

Great thread. Love the open road racer! NICE! BIG HP too! Is that car bored and stroked or just S/Ced? How can you get those kinds of numbers (to the ground) from a 5.0L S/C??? I am expecting a post that says the car is a 6.0 or a 6.5L.

Best,
James

Default GT2(4) car on TV at 10:05PM CST

Guys,

This is a strange site I have for you tonight. It is like a regular TV station that runs several hours of footage in a loop... So if you miss something just check the time and tune in again.

Anyway, it is an internet TV station out of San Marcos, TX. They were at the track this past weekend when I was there and shot quite a bit of footage. They have narrowed it down to about 6 minutes of video and I get a bit over a minute of that footage. Was hoping they had used some of the footage of me ROARING past the camera, but they did not...DANG IT!

Anyway, it shows me on the back straight, then pulling into the pits and getting out of the car an showing my hand controls. You can click on the tab of the main window for "schedule/line up" to see what the order of the programs are and how long each is and then you can extrapolate when something you want to see will pop up again.

I am hoping that eventually they will do it a bit more like YouTube where you can just click on what you want to see and play it on demand...

Check it out: www.smtx.tv

I am trying to get a DVD copy of all the footage shot at the track weekend before last. No word yet. I'll keep you all posted if I can get it and there is anything good in it I can mix and put on YouTube or something like that.
