Default What non-SM oil to use?

So I've been reading up on the API certifications and that SM is bad because it contains too little ZDDP. I see some people are using Brad Penn Penn-Grade 1 20W50 in their cars. I went down to the local NAPA today to see what I could find. They only had a couple of oils that were not API-SM rated:

- LubroMoly 5W40 (CI-4)
- Valvoline Fleet 15W40 (CI-4)
- Mobil Delvac 15W40 (CI-4)
- NAPA full synthetic 15W50 (SL/SJ)

Anyone using the NAPA stuff? Their gold oil filters are good quality; how about their engine oil? I would rather stay with a 15W50 or 20W50 instead of stepping down to a xxW40 oil. Anyone know any other 15W50 oil that's not SM and isn't stupid-high price (i.e. more than $5-$6 per quart)?

I use the gospel according to Doug as my guide. You need to know the spec for HTHS. Also, be aware that SM doesn't mean they pulled most of the Zn and Phos out. In fact, it's still quite high. The boutique oil guys are getting a lot of things mixed up to create fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Here is a scan (not great) of a table from Full Throttle magazine showing Virgin Oil Analysis including M1 15-50 SM.

Kewl, so I'll just stay with Mobil 1 15W-50 then. Thanks!

Yeah me too, nice to find lots of M1 15-50 around now. It was pretty scarce at one point. Not anymore.

I think its tag line is "for high performance engines" or something, thats specific to the 15-50 weight.

Doug recently said on the 993 forum (applies here as well):

Jimbo3 - Use M1 15w-50 (either version) with great confidence (M1 5w-50 if available) - these lubricants have the highest levels of ZDDP in the M1 range (if that is what you are concerned about). The level is actually at about the optimum level to be used in ANY petrol engine lubricant! M1 TDT 5w-40 has a slightly (10%) higher level! Being synthetics they also meet other requirements that have been determined as a requirement by Porsche

Another relevant quote from Doug:

Concentrating on one component in a lubricant's formualtion is very very unwise and fails to take into account the total Anti-Wear (AW) and other additives used in the formulation "package". Many new AW additives are actually proving to be much better than excessive levels of "ZDDP". This has been well known for many many years

You can use M1 products with great confidence - those that meet Porsche specifications are ideal in Porsche engines of almost any age!
