Should I purge the OLD gas?
How imporant is it to remove ancient gas from a car that sat for a few years?
Does the fuel flow in a circuit where it returns to the tank. If so, I'm all set to go without doing anything but filling the tank. Jeez, such rookie questions. (Well, this is my first fuel injected vehicle.)

If you pull the fuel guage sending unit from the hatch area, which is an easy procedure, you can easily syphon the fuel out of the tank and also clean the sending unit of gunk and varnish.
A new fuel filter would be something to think about.

The tank is completely empty. Can I just turn on the ignition and have the gas recirculate into the tank? I mean, the manual has one pulling solenoids and jumpering terminals. It has to be easier than doing all of that.

I would drain the tank put in a couple gallons of fresh fuel run the pump to flush the lines a bit drain the tank again ..put in a couple gallons more and try to start it . Any number of additives may be usefull to help clean the fuel distributor and injectors but wait until you have it running and can add more fuel .

Silly question, but what do you do with all the old gas? When I picked up my shark, I thought it was on empty after having sat for a year. After getting to a station and putting in a couple gallons, I discovered the guage had just been stuck. So now I have a tank full of old/new gas that I will need to clean out.

I put the old gas in either my old '61 Case backhoe. Or I put it in my crane, which has a 50 gallon tank. But some auto repair shops have tanks designed for gas disposal.

Even after a drain and flush there may, I repeat may be some issues. You may not have to do any of the following things, I'm just throwing this out as an example. That said, I bought a Kawasaki road bike many years ago that was inside a barn, leaning against a wall for 3+yrs. I had a hard time making it run well after I had drained and filled it w/ new gas. I ended up taking the carbs out and in the bowls, were varnish patterns from the bottom to about 2/3s of the way up and ended in a diagonal pattern across the bowl. After cleaning it out, (soak in carb cleaner) I realized it was from the way the gas sat in the bowls as the bike was leaning against the wall. If your 928 has been sitting for a similar time, you may have to drain and add a concentrated mix of gas/carb cleaner and hot wire your fuel pump to run w/o the car running. Something strong enough to dissolve the varnish in the system, but not strong enough to damage anything. Then after that I would use a heavy duty injector cleaner setup that mechanics use that comes in an aerosol can. You disable the fuel pump and the can connects to the fuel rail. The car actually runs off the pressure in the can. By the time the can is empty your injectors should be clean. Maybe it would take a few cans if they're really bad, I don't know. Cobey, that's funny. I used to live in Los Gatos, and actually drove the thing thru the east bay when I moved up this way. It's pretty cool. Four wheel drive and all.
Tresamore, I know just what that looks like, and I'm prayin I can just start this and not have that kind of headache. Something tells me this is going to be a piece of cake. I mean, so far this car is like, well, NEW. I'm so blown away at the deal I got. So, if the fuel is a problem, I can't complain anyways. I've got a bottle of Techron in it now. Fingers are crossed. Now if 928int will get the oil filter to me........ Thanks

Surely there's a local foreighn car parts store with the oil filter - you can ALWAYS use the one you have on order later!!
I by mine locally at a little auto parts store that specializes in VW's. It is still the OEM filter...

Nope. There isn't even a Porsche dealership in the entire county! But that's why I like it here. This is pickup country. None of them furin cars around here. The more I hear the fanaticism from you guys, the more excited I get about driving this car. Remember, I've waited since 1981! That's the last time I had a car. I spent 15 years driving a '55 Chevy pickup. But that's another story.
