928 Search in 65706 area
I am located in southwest Missouri and am on a search for a 928. I have owned a 924S for about a year. I am selling it later today. I will have $4000 to spend on one.
Help me find a good one… please!
I would prefer an 80's model. I am a decent mechanic so and am good with minor repair. It will be my daily driver. Transmission isn't a concern because I can drive both.
Any help would be great.

Welcome. There are a limited number of 928 owners in Missouri. I live in Columbia and bought my 928 a little over a year ago. I had to keep my eyes open for a long time before I got my shark and flew out to Cleveland to get it.
Your budget of $4000 might limit you a little bit, but you might still find a good early 80s 16V. It is amazing how cheap some of these great early cars are going for.
If you find your car keep on rennlist as it has invaluable information with a lot of knowledgeable 928 owners.

I know the budget is a problem but I am going to do what I can. Thanks for the help. I like all the 928's so as long as it runs good I am fine. I plan on building it into what I want and that’s why I don’t want to go very high on the initial purchase. How much do the early models weight compared to the later ones?

It is good and I just bought it. Just kidding, PPI is the only way to know what you are getting into. I too had a small budget to get into the car and I have spent alot on it since then. You should know what you can expect to have to replace right away and what you can budget out over time.

Also, research the models to make sure you are getting the model you want. The 32V motor might be worth saving up for. Or if you really plan on High speed ORR you might want to hold out for an S4 (87 or up) as the aerodynamics are much improved. I got my S4 for $9,000. That allowed me to get my car and have it. Grant it I have spent about $2000 over the last year on "little stuff". Gaskets, hoses, all fluids, all filters, brake pads, etc...... That is even without any major failures of the big known expensive stuff. But, that was with me doing everything myself. There is no way I could afford this car if I was paying a Porsche mechanic to fix stuff for me.
Just make sure your car will be suitable to you for your intended use. It becomes a lot more expensive in the long run to make a cheaper car fit your performance needs than to buy a slightly newer more expensive car that will have the updated aerodynamics, brakes and suspension.

You should read the "read this first" post at the top of the page to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into. And research the model differences (via that thread) and the others on here - of which there are many - so you can really decide what model you want - the early cars are <relatively> simple compared to an S4/GT/GTS, but don't have near as much power. Unless you get a grey-market Euro car, which in Missouri is probably a viable option (not so much in California). Then there's the 85-86 model, which is kind of in-between, or an 86.5, which has some more upgrades already. (See what I mean, it's complicated, what comes on the cars varies quite a bit, and you should settle on WHAT you really want and wait for it to come up). People here commonly go 1/2 way across the country (or farther) to get the right car when it shows up.

I just purchased a 84' 928S 16v. Get ready to go to work, this car will keep you busy, but it is fun if you enjoy doing your own work.
I would try and stay away from a dealer and find a privately owned car. That way you can grill the PO! Check Craigslist MO:

I think it would be a rare find to buy a 928 and just drive away without the reality of having to do some work right away. Plan on having about $2k at your disposal for the little things that will come up.
Vacuum leaks, fuel delivery, RAD leaks, leaking seals/gaskets............etc.
Good news is..............a buyers market right now. The economy is slow and gas is high. V8 gas hog exotic sports cars are not in high demand right now!!!! On the other hand Spring has Sprung in the Midwest (I am in Champaign,IL) and guys are looking to break out their toys and buy new ones.
