I have never driven a 928, but if all goes well I will look at it tonight. I know this is a stupid question but my 924S had to have at least 93 octane to run smooth and got 25mpg with it... What does an 84 928 S get and does it require a high octane?
I appreciate you being patient with me. I don't want to buy the car for speed, I want it for beauty. I really like the 84. It just flows. I am sure you know what I mean... almost like a shark! Wait… I get the name now… Lol… If I do end up test driving it, what do I need to look for other than basics? I am interested in what you pro’s think the value is of the one previously mentioned.
Thanks again for the infinite knowledge.

I would hope that you could get it for a lot less than $5,000....maybe more like $3,000?

- There appears to be some scratches on the front nose/fender areas.
- The hood doesn't appear to be sitting flush. (bad pic maybe?)
- The middle part of the lower front spoiler has been ripped out and the grill looks jacked up like they ran over something big.
- The interior is shot to ****. There aren't any words to describe a person that is stupid enough to let their dog claw around inside a 928.
- Judging from the condition it's in, its got to be leaking oil (common), and maybe other things too.
- Motor mounts are probably shot (big job).
- Timing belt probably needs to be done; maybe water pump, cam gears, and rollers too? (big job).
- Theres probably a whole bunch of small things wrong that are either broken, not functioning properly, or tweaked to work temporarily.
- They adulterated the rear bumper cover with a stupid Oakley Auto World sticker (subtract at least a grand for that).

Overall I guess the body doesn't look too bad in the pics; although, the left rear looks suspect.
The engine "looks" fairly clean.
The rub strips are not desirable to some people.
History records? Probably none, or few.

do you think they actually put that sticker on the back? Dear God, that's totally criminal.

The hood not sitting flush could just be the hinges needing some lube. Mine did that.

The interior looks like crap. Will a set of racing seats fit in the front? I know the back seat can be removed but can the rear center be? Is the dealer going to negotiate if I walk up with cash?
You guys are awesome and I really appreciate the help!!!
Thanks, Sam

Im with the others... budget buys are costly and this site is worth the $30 to be a member many times over!

I purchased the nicest car i could with them money I had, for you $4K. Not a $3K car and try to use the $1K to keep it running. In the long run I think this is the best strategy. Seems like what I see for sale, when you get below the $3000 mark, there is alot of junk. Now there are some deals out there!

Is it plausible to find a good 928 for $4k?

Might be worth not taking cash to buy it if its your first test-drive of a 928. Instead, drive it, tell the dealer you'll think about it, and then go drive another one.

Also, get things like the full block number off the engine (on the front just below the main coolant hose that comes off and joins the passenger-side end of the rad)., and then confirm that its at least the right type of engine for the car and hasn't suffered an engine swap after previous lack of maintenance.

It is possible to find a decent 928 for $4k, but you'll have to spend time looking and waiting for it to come on the market, and it probably won't be via a dealer. This forum is great for that - people here are incredibly helpful and will sometimes be able to assist in looking at a car, or know something of the car's history.

Go meet local owners too before you buy - get to know what a really nice car is like as a benchmark

Impulse sharks can cost a lot of $'s, no matter how cheap they are.

I called the dealer yesterday and easily negotiated to 4k. He says it’s a 2 owner car with a clean carfax. He claimed to drive it 60 miles round trip to the dealership everyday. He told me the AC compressor does not engage. Other than that he described no mechanical issues and said it doesn’t leak any oil or have cooling issues. He only stated the rough interior and front valence issue. He seems eager to get rid of it. What is the verdict? I think 4k is about right, but I am an uneducated moron with 928’s, I only know only the basics… he also said that it was a sohc not a dohc. He just posted it wrong in the listing.
Thanks,
Sam
I also realize that I will most likely have to pay more than it is worth because of it rarity in my area. But how much more…

Hey Sam.

I agree with the last post, a good 928 find will most likely NOT be from a used car dealer (unless they specialize in exotic sports cars).

If this car has been sitting and not running (it has been winter in the Midwest after all), I suspect you will find no leaks until the car gets a good driving and pressure builds through the system. Then you will see where the leaks are, my guess is an oil leak somewhere also need to be aware of the plastic end caps on the RAD, the passenger side will fail. If this is a 100k mile car and those are original, my bet is they will fail soon. Look for a small leak on the RAD passenger side where the plastic cap meets the RAD, the leak will be on top.

I would also stress waiting for the right car, privately owned and good maint history.

You may have to travel to get it and trailer it back, but there should be some finds in MO..............are you following up on some of the Craigslist post's?

Good Luck.

I went and drove the car on sat. I liked it but a few things need said. The exterior is more of a blue than silver. The back seats look better in person than picture. The center can easily be cleaned up. It has slotted rotors in the front and good tires all the way around. Looks like some old grandpa used to own it. No scratch marks were on the tires, which means no burn-outs. The wheels need a good cleaning along with the whole car. The body looks great and the hood does line up correctly. The pic showed a big scratch on the bumper but it didn't exist. The seats need done and the dash needs a cover but is in good shape. (Only one small crack by the windshield) Over all I liked the car. It started and ran perfectly. Under the hood it appears that maintenance was done. It also had a newer ignition system with clean oil (Jacobs’s electronics wires). Car ran great and shifted through all gears perfectly and smoothly. Everything power worked but the hatch. I think it is something small but would just have to work on it to find out.
Thanks for the help and I will post with the next update,
Sam

Not sure what kind of mechanic you might be, but here is a fixer-upper. i have very few details on this car and have not seen it. I think the guy said it used to be an automatic, so you are probably stuck with that. It is also a US version, not a Euro and I think he said it has a clear title. It is under St. Louis Craigslist under "auto parts".

Parting out 1984 928s Porsche...Front passenger fender damaged, tranny already sold. Engine runs great, Rest of body in great shape. $1500.00 takes the whole thing having to sacrifice....Call 618-402-4701 or 618-254-8330 or you can email me at czar465@netzero.net

I have an auto transmission from my '88 I might sell. I just did a swap for a '91 with the 2.54 gears. Then all you would need is a fender and I am sure 928 INTL or 928s R Us have them, just shipping will be expensive...
