The cheapest you can get them off eBay it looks like is about $800 right now. i am sure that is without LSD or anything like that. Shipping will be expensive.

let me know if you end up looking at this option. i have a '88 auto trans I just removed that I might sell. i am not certain yet since I have not ran the replacement.

I am going to call the guy in an hour or so.

So hypothetically...
Car: $1250 buying +$1000 Trans + 400 Fender +200 Paint...
Around 2850?
Is that an appropriate value?
I am going to see if I can get some pics.

I don't know how far you are willing to go but there seems to be a good buy on a 78 Euro in Dayton OH - $1800. I just move to Cincinnati and found it while surfing CL. He said it needs a fuel pump but FP relays are notorious for going out so ?. He thinks it has two fuel pumps but if I'm not mistaken the 78s only had the external fuel pump so that would be a relatively inexpensive fix. You would have to love the color or it would get on your nerves (I think its kind of cool...but maybe not as a daily driver). Here is the link:

I called the guy last night and well...
The car was wreaked; when it was wreaked the trans developed a leak. Then he tried to sell the whole car but the person only wanted a trans. The trans is missing now but the motor runs perfect. Doesn't leak or burn any oil. The interior is perfect and the body would be except for the one fender. The "vent looking" piece in the front is broken also. about 100k miles and seems like a good buy. He is solid on 1500.
What do you guys think?

I was thinking… I am going to let the one is STL go. I don’t want to buy one without a trans. Then fix it, and find out the motor needs work, or something like that. Easy way to lose lots of cash...
I like the one in Dayton. The green is badass! But that is over 500 miles away. Not logical to just go get tomorrow.
I am hoping to get one in the next month (if I can find one).
I don’t really care what year, but would prefer a 84-86 or so, but the 70's ones are sweet. I will have about 3k cash to spend. I was going to try to have about 3500-4000, but I will have a lot of expenses after getting it. (taxes, title, inspection, ect…)

Is an older 928 (70's) easier to work on than an newer (80's)?
