That does have a different viewpoint. Points out that there have been problems before. Also the stolen parts makes the impound more reasonable.

Probably a less slanted perspective of the events than that put out by theNewspaper.com, a journal of the politics of driving.

The real problem is the people that elect the legislators that make laws that allow this, and keep them in office.
Putting the blame on the people in law enforcement (or calling them pigs) that enforce the laws that are in effect is misguided, and short sided, at the very least.
The Police are hired help, not elected management.
I wonder why the good folks out there do not just vote these idiots out of office and have the laws changed, IF that is what they want?
The best way to repeal a unjust law is by a total and totalitarian enforcement of that law, that is a historical fact.
I do not see that change coming in CA even if the people want change.
They have all ready almost disarmed the honest law abiding folks.
When it comes right down to it, real power comes from not only being armed, but being armed, and be willing to defend your rights.
These raids are BS, not only because they are wrong, but also because they are using Federal funds to inforce laws that are not supported by the people that are paying for the inforcement of them.
I know I sure as hell do not want any of my money going to enforce this.
Who is really behind these laws, the tree huggers, or is it more insidious than that?
I am not trying to stir anything up, but some of the things about this thread bothers me on several levels.
The name calling is a sign of something, but I will not go into that.
I am talking about the laws on a clean high HP car with no stolen parts.
Flame suite on.

I have a totally stock 928. I have no tinted windows. I have no exhaust modifications and the exhaust is quiet. I intend to keep the car that way deliberately to avoid attracting attention, and because I am satisfied with it the way it is.
HOWEVER....................I see no reason to think that I should feel as if I am a criminal or a menace because I make my car "faster". Nor do I understand how making a car '"faster" classifies me as a "street racer", whatever that is.
I also don't see how the Wright Bros. should be made to feel odd for wanting to fly or NASA should be shut down because some of their space shuttles have failed and people were killed. Evolution will continue despite the efforts of the do gooder idiots.
People will still try to run farther, and faster, and climb higher, and seek more efficiency and accomplish more with less despite the oppression of those who would attempt to "protect us from ourselves". It is what we do. At least some of us. As Ayn Rand said: Get out (and stay out) of our way.

I found this and i still think this is so funny (The financial aspect of it)
"Michael Calderon, 22, of San Bernardino, stood in the parking lot as his 1995 Honda Civic hatchback, which he bought for $600, was loaded onto a tow truck.
Police impounded his car because officers believed some of its parts were stolen.
Calderon said he bought the parts from a reputable business.
"It's devastating," said Calderon, who spent $20,000 on car improvements. "That's my soul right there. This is the worst night of my life.""
$20,000 on a $600 car. Hey who said spending $16,000 on an OB thats worth $8,000 is that bad. It could be worse!

While I admit the guy's priorities are a bit off balance by about $18,000, but after all it is his hobby and passion. But what I find most disturbing is the presumption that the police may confiscate property they "suspect" consists partly of "stolen property". The Constitution reads: "....and no warrants shall issue but upon probably cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons or things to be seized."
What things were described in their warrantless search and seizure of this individual's car?

welcome back red ufo!!! whoo hoo!! missed ya man!!
Kalifornication got ya down? wait till the whole country is like this gotta face it - the public streets are being regulated because too many friggin pinheads have screwed up.
now I remember why I got into off road racing - it's one of the last havens for gearheads to play w/out being beatup every time they fire up their toys.

Having an engine with the engine numbers ground off is what they look for. They impound the car and use acid to try to raise the grain from the stamped numbers they then compare to engines reported stolen and determine what insurance company now owns that engine after they paid off the claim on the stolen car. Stolen license plates , "Borrowed" annual stickers (felony) , Insurance issues , being drunk or drinking in a car you do NOT need to be driving ! California law makes WATCHING street racing a crime. I have little to say about what is right or wrong and simply am commenting on how it is.

Reading about your SC and other engine mods, I thought that over there, in the states,
you actually can "title and drive almost anything with four wheels".
Only show-stopper seemed to be emissions regulations.
Not so?
Here in the old world, Europe, there are different, and generally more restricted regulations for what can be done to a car.
Here in Nisse (Norway) it is especially difficult and strict, but, it should be possible to get plates on almost everything that is properly built and safe, given the necessary effort to cooperate with the authorities.
Modifying the engine can then be doen, but you must fulfill the emissions regulations valid when the car was new, and you may need to get papers from the manufacturer (Porsche) that the power increase does not compromise safety, and brakes and suspension may have to be improved.
Another problem here is tax on power increase, can turn out to be very expensive with a SC.
In Germany, i believe they have very strict regulations for both safety and emissions.
In general, regulations in EU include both safety and emissions issues.

What they fail to do here is much if any SAFETY inspection or roadworthyness checks. Varies state to state but there is some real junk out there driving around with no shocks ,bad brakes, body damage/rust, broken glass, and often spewing out clouds of smoke.
