I don't think it's illegal to modify the engine. It's just illegal to operate it.

What are they going to do when people start "supercharging" their electric cars? Will that be considered illegal becasue it uses more electricity?

"But if it saves just one child... then it will have been worth it!" Puuuulease!

I cant believe this crap! Cameras to look at the underside of the car!

The very interesting point i saw int he article was that it cost taxpayers $503,000 in overtime for these guys to set up this sting/raid. Thats BS!

All over what? I imagine allot of those guys had cold air intake kits and other junk like that that isnt CARB certified. FYI, to get something CARB certified, costs about $50,000-$100,000 + Its a joke, thats why many tuners only state 49 state legal.

Another thing thats irritating to me is the quote from an officer saying "why would you put that on, why would you need to make your car faster?" Thats BS! I know a few Sheriff's and the ones i met were all car crazy and all had their own toys. If I ever caught one of them saying **** like that i would call them out (They are friends of mine mind you) but thats BS to be saying some stupid crap like that.

Oh and remind me never to go to OC!

I suspect the next generation of HotRooders/ImportRacers/etc will be running around with software, high current diodes, heavier gauge wiring, and cooling kits for their electric motors that put out lots more thrust than originally intended

Yes Andy the X-pipe is illegal as well...in a state where the Gov lives in Beverly Hills and commutes to Sacramento in his private JET ...

Even the Xpipe too! Atleast weed is semi legal there.

Becareful what you admit Mongo. There might be rent-a-online-cops trolling for $$$ on here. They'd only spend 1/2 million dollars to hire 50 cops (hey how much is that over time) to collect $2,000 in revenue and call the bust a success.

The state should only care that my 928 puts as much smog out as a Honda CR-V at this moment. The CO and NOx levels were so low with the new cats I put on that you could probably assume the water coming out from the tailpipe is safe to drink.

We used to have this wonderful law that said cars over 30 years old were exempt from smog checks, but unfortunatley the Governator endorsed bill in 2005 that said only cars built before 1975 were exempt.

Jay Leno went up to bat against it, understand he and Arnold exchanged a few words over it too.

This newspaper is obviously not a fan of Jay Leno or high performance cars, but it does give the rest of the 49 states a taste of what life is like in California!

The concept that driving is FUN seems to elude most of our elected officials but I guess riding in the back seat of the limo might be part of the reason. Mass transit being the "holy Grail" of those who have no intention of ever riding the bus themself

Oh that's great. I just find it funny that a Ford Excursion is CARB compliant and my 928 with a supercharger and X-pipe w/ cats is not even though its emissions are almost non-existent. I just had it inspected and the numbers I remember from the slip are 2ppm HC and 5ppm NOx on the 25mph test.

It seems to me that CARB is a joke, and the only thing that should really count is the yearly emissions inspection. But that would probably be too logical and wouldn't make some people enough money...

Dan what if you decided to move to Ca, then sold your supercharged 928 to some rich kid whos just drools over its looks and awesome power.

Then the said rich kid goes to transfer title registeration, and attempts to have it smog tested and fails. This would end up a rude awakening. Is this some catch 22 when the car can't be driven or even registered in CA is nearly rendered junk to a degree unless the shark is brought back to stock?

I'm assuming that you are suggesting it would fail the check based on the visual inspection of the supercharger. I guess the way the laws in CA are currently, it would have to have the supercharger removed and the stock components put back in order to pass and be registered in CA. Therein lies the irony, since based on the actual rolling emissions test it would be cleaner than most cars and pass with flying colors.

Is a supercharger illegal in CA......the answer is "sometimes"......if the builder of the kit goes to the trouble to have it tested and pass CARB certification than yes it is legal......but thats VERY pricey...& not worth it for such a small market as 928 owners.....

The other gray area is if you live in what is known as a "clean air" county (none in LA)..where you only smog your car when you transfer title.....so you get your new stock 928 and smog it...then you can modify it all you want and it will always be street legal!! (sorta)

Another piece of advice for those that live in smog **** areas (think LA)...IF you are pulled over and the cop asks you to open the hood.........what do you do? I'm quite sure most of you would say NO.....guess what.....you go to jail for non-compliance, you car gets towed and the cop pops the hood anyway..... WHY if the cop has reasonable suspicion to believe there is a smog violation in the vehicle (typically on ricers....could be the noise level of the car, smoke or after market muffler).....he has the right to inspect it...... But I wouldn't worry to much about that since most cops only look for ricers & wouldn't know what was stock and what isn't on 928's
