I just noticed something. How do you route the oil dipstick with the 85 block used for an S4 set up?
I remember using the 85 block (M28-44) on my 5 liter part euro, but was able to use the screw in dip stick holder. on the S4,it has a different dip stick set up that is pressed through a seal and bolted to the timing belt cover.
There is also a small steel ring screwed in with a 6mm flat head screw on top of the bell housing, that looks like its something that has to do with the timing ring sensor anyone know what that is??

Here are the pics.
Take a look at that thing bolted on the bell housing.
the piston to cylinder gaps are pretty large, but I guess this is what they need to do to make this design work properly
And finally, the dip stick configuration. will this be a problem or a modification i need to make to make it work in the S4?

When we ordered the pistons for this motor we did not tell JE how to make them, we figured they would know better than us. We gave them the specs of the bore, rods, head dome, stroke, rings, told them it was a race application, told them what compression ratio we wanted, and let them do the rest.
I suggest you call JE and ask them what they did and why they did it that way if you are interested.

The aluminum spacer you are refering to is required to get the proper spacing for the S4 crank signal sensor on the 86 block.
Todd has converted a number of the 85-86 blocks to S4 spec and no one that I am aware of had to ask how to attach the dipstick tube so I can only assume it will be pretty straight forward.
I'm not sure why you are asking all these questions here when you can just pick up the phone and call Todd, who put it together and will know for certain why, what for, and how come.

Hi Tim, Love the packing job as i said! (and the stickers)
the guys at CT couldnt even wait for me to get there to open the box and peak inside. when i got there , they were looking at it like it was some top secret military project.
Thanks for the info. I wasnt worried, just curious, and thought i would pose the question to the listers out of interest/education, as it is partly their engine too!!!
Im sure the dip stick tube will be the last of my worries in getting this thing in.
But, as you know, i usually worry more about the simple things a little too much!

Compression ratio
Mark,when I built the 416 cu in stroker for my drag car(not 928)sold it to buy my 928 back then.
Here are some formulas to figure out compression etc.
Figuring out a gasket thickness to cc volumn
You can use this for thickness of a head gasket or piston above or below deck.This can then be used when figuring final compression ratio.
CC volumn for head gasket or to use for piston above or below deck.
Keep in mind piston above deck would be later be subtracted used as a negative in formula.Piston below deck would be a positive as would a valve pocket.
Bore*Bore*12.87*(depth or deck clearnace or head gasket thickness)
Used to figure out head gasket cc to be used in next formula
Also swept volumn is used below is figured out by:
(Displacement cu.in.*2.0483)
Deck clearance would be piston above or below deck
Above deck would have to be entered as a negative number
Below deck would have to be entered as a positive number
You have to change eveything it to CC volumn as valve pockets,head gasket and also the head chamber cc would have to be checked fo cc volumn
The following after converting everything into cc would be used:
Its everything with the cc volumn+swept voulmn divided by all the same cc amounts without swept volumn
The following would be an example
Valve pocket cc+Head CC+Head gasket cc+Deck clearnance cc+Swept volumn/
Valve pocket cc+Head CC+Head gasket cc+Deck clearnance cc
Example below:
8cc valve pocket+63cc head cc+8cc head gasket cc+6.39 Deck clearance+853 Swept Volume/8cc valve pocket+63cc head cc+8cc head gasket cc+6.39 Deck clearance=
938.39/85.39=10.99 compression ratio
My 416 cu in small block chysler had the piston .030 below deck and still was 11.0 compression with flat top piston.In super stock racing they could run the piston +.045 above deck which would be over 13:1 compression with a flat top piston.
Not sure if this will help in figuring your final compression ratio.
Some day would like to check into supercharger for 928 not sure if anyone on the East Coast in NY that has one would like to check one out sometime.

Yes the engine pics are very good , but I must admit from my perspective I am more interested in what was done to the old engine .

He has a running engine NOW that he must destroy for all the bits to finish the new "motor" which is only a short block thus needs a gasket set etc, etc, bought new. And as mentioned the heads would benefit from some work , bigger cams would be nice.... If he removes his current engine no more races until it is done and in !
