How "firm" is the price - anyone else looking at this yet?

Rich mentioned he's put some money into it already, and that he's in no rush to sell.

I didn't get into that with the seller.

I should add the seller is a good guy, Rich got the same impression on that as I when he met him.

3. I trust Rich's judgement as we seem to be on the same page regarding its potential.
4. It has an older tranny, the owner took the original tranny out, rebuilt an older one himself (have no details on the rebuild), and put that in the car (I believe the older tranny comes with the car).

It may be a great find for someone else, just not me.

I'll post the pics shortly, and I'll ask Rich if he minds if I post his comments that he sent me.
Sorry didn't catch the part about the transmission and forgot that you are that far away.

Unknown, but great question.

Here's the info from the original CL ad. I would recommend calling him, like I said, he's a good guy and seemed open about the condition of the car, although, like I stated previously, our perceptions on condition are much different.

"Rare among the 928s some s4 upgrades stock from the factory black rebuilt tranny strong motor needs interior work very fast call (530)415-2327 "

His name is Chad.

Those pictures are worth more then 1,000 words

If it was local, I'd grab it and stick the spare interior in, but by the time you add in shipping, it really looses it's value.

Thanks for putting forth the effort guys

No problem, I don't believe I mentioned anything about the tranny previously, just learned that last night.

And questions are good! The more we know about a potential purchase, the better off anyone that is interested will be.

That was my first response. I felt sorry for the thing.

Maybe some brave soul will restore it to its former glory, or get it on the track for glory there. That would be great.

I like to call this "wire spaghetti"

SERIOUSLY.....we need to have a "make Bills track shark run" party...... With a bunch of us tracking stuff down I bet it could be running in a day (or so)

Here the comments that Rich sent me after he went to see the 86.5 - note a few slight edits to remove a few terms :

--------------------

It's ROUGH. Interior is DOA, and the wiring is all over the place. Could be some scary electrical problems just waiting to happen. For example, the ignition isn't hooked up...you put the key in, turn it, then grab the ignition switch under the dash and use a screwdriver to turn it and fire it up. Wires everywhere, center console missing parts, ***** etc. Headliner is out, but is still in one piece + there is an extra non-sunroof headliner. (His idea was to seal up the sunroof since it won't open, and put in the nicer non-sunroof liner.) Seats are toast, not worth anything. Dash is bad. Missing driver side door panel, passenger side is installed but poor shape. Qtr panels in below average shape. Rear seats in poor shape. A/C doesn't work. Has rear A/C.

Engine....starts up fine, no strange noises, no loud lifters. Typical oil leaks underneath, very dirty oil pan.

Transmission....here's the story...original one was removed, and is in pieces. It's included in price. The one in the car is from a 1979 928. Chad pulled it out of a car at the junkyard, paid $120 for it, then bought $300 in parts from 928 Intl and rebuilt it himself. He said is was simple to rebuild it. I guess he works at an auto shop, so isn't afraid of taking a trans apart. I don't think it has LSD in it now, but not 100% sure....it was just the impression I got from him.

Body....rough. Hood is very faded, I think the rear hatch struts are on the hood. Rear hatch has no struts. Difficult to close and latch hatch. Hood not lined up with front cover. Front cover has lots of cracks in paint. Front spoiler is trashed. Missing belly pan. No rub strips, some dings, some scratches in paint. Wheels are trash...curb hits took out chunks of all wheels, flaking chrome plating. Drilled rotors look OK, but I couldn't see them too well.

Test ride...I didn't drive it. But the engine felt very strong up to redline. Sounds fine. Shifts slow, but that could be a combination of old style transmission and the fact that he doesn't drive it much and isn't used to shifting it. Speedo takes a little time to work after leaving a stop. I didn't ask to drive it, and really didn't want to. Sh*t, I was almost frightened when he took it up to 80mph....and I've ridden with George at 189mph!

...the car is too rough to restore.... He really shouldn't put any money in the car. Its for parts or a track beast. But the overall condition leaves too much uncertainty even making it into a track car. Can it make it up to Seattle?....big maybe. I personally wouldn't do it. The engine sounds fine, but too much other scary stuff to go wrong. Is it a $2500 car....not really. Seller paid $2000 for it a couple years ago, put a little money and time into the trans, and that's about it. If I were a guy that loved 86.5 928's, and wanted a track car...I might consider it, but not if it was 1000 miles away.

So those are some thoughts off the top of my head. Seller is a nice kid, but isn't desperate to sell as far as I can tell. He will sell it eventually, I told him don't bother putting any money into it.....he was actually going to spend $1300 on a dash and pod re-do...

Forgot to mention the non-working power steering. Blown hose, so owner just drives it without any fluid, so no power steering. Owner disclosed this to Ed before I went to look at it, so I didn't include it in my comments to Ed.
