Default Changed the gearbox oil today and..

Have noticed lately a bit more noise comming from the shifter boot area. Also when cold, 4th gear pops out after letting off the gas. So, I got scared and changed the trans lube. It's a 82 5 speed, non LSD.

What came out was aprox 2.5 quarts, dirty and the drain plug was full of chips! Installed Redline MTL 75-125, what difference that stuff makes, quieter and smoother shifts! Anyway, would this be considered normal?

And I also discovered this, a leaking CV joint!

It was fine in Dec when the manhole covers came off in favor of TT hollow spokes. Can't hear any funky noises from it - yet. What should I do, buy a new axle/CV shaft?

Thanks.

unless you have an idea when the lube was changed last (are there any records?), you may be looking at originally factory installed gear lube.

as for the chunks of stuff on the drain plug, I would say all of this leads me to believe that the trans was never serviced since new, depending upon mileage.

CV joint/axle shaft---

unless it's got play in it, you may just need to change out the seal. of course, when you change the seal, you should be able to determine if the axle shaft/CV joint is bad.

Don't use MTL. Use 75W90 or 75W90NS.

That crap on your plug is standard and not much to be worried about.
Somewhere I have a pic of one with quite a bit more on it than that.

Agreed. Mine had far more metal growth on the plug.

Again, MTL=bad for 928s.

Did oil change seem to alleviate the rejection of 4th gear?

Mine also pops-out of 4th forcefully under any engine braking, so am real interested in whether you got improvement.

Did you pull both drain plugs? If you only got 2.5 quarts I bet you didnt(been there done that), there are two drain plugs and one fill plug, one drain in the rear below the fill, and another toward the front of the box.
When I did my oil chang I had alot more metal than that on the drain plug.
Good Luck

Yes, unless you are hearing noises coming from the CV joint, it's probably good. Just need to get a boot kit and remove the axles, clean and inspect the joints, repack the joints, install new boots and re-install the axles. There's a writeup in DIY 928. Getting new axles/CV joints may be quicker and less of a mess but it's also quite a bit more expensive when your existing joints are most likely perfectly fine.
