Flip the adapter 180.... That should do it. It almost did on mine, but I had to drill and reclock just a tad.....

Finally had a chance to get the car back on the lift and try to fit the new starter. Had to clock it so was hanging down all the way but still was hitting something when held up there.

Seems the nose of the starter is hitting the flywheel (turned engine and could feel it when then starter was held in there). I've sent a note to Rog..but compared to the pics from Sterling...mines different.

Bummer..it's really close...could shim it...but that seems like a bodgy solution...

you have the adapter plate on 180 deg. You need to swap the holes 180 deg

it's too deep...the snout of the gear on the starter is hitting the flywheel..otherwise it fits ..

For whatever it's worth, here are some shots of Roger's 'new' IMI starter on Hebert's stroker with its GB pan spacer:

Orientation of the starter mounting plate on mine:

Pic of mine to show proximity of the (+) terminal to the oil pan (there's roughly 1/4" clearance, pic is misleading:

Hebert's car did require a little kissing of the 'dots' on the pan:

Your pics looks like it has the same setup as Sterlings pic... on mine, the power post on the starter is on top and would hit the pan if I could fit it that way..

there were three holes on my face plate and I removed the screws..rotated the plate to the furthest hole and tightened up. This allows the starter to fit up there, with the body hanging down on the outside..just clearing the header.

When I put it in there...I could add a small washer between the starter and the bellhousing and it would fit... otherwise...it hits inside on the flywheel

Tom,

All the latest starters from Roger have the post on top instead of the side, but they can be moved.

And the plate with the screws is offset. If you remove the screws, rotate the plate 180 deg and try it, then I doubt it will hit.

The power post isn't hitting....the gear on the end of the starter hits the flywheel inside the bellhousing. When mounted ...I turn the crank and I can feel/hear the flywheel grinding on the end of the starter..

It's clear that Tom was sent the wrong starter, the power post and the ignition lead are reversed compared to Sterling's design. No amount of clocking will allow the starter solenoid to sit under the pan as it does in Rob's pics.

As Colin said, rotate the plate 180, it will clear the gear. Mine came with that adapter 180 out from the box.

How does rotating the plate fix the interference issue? (keeping the pinion from touching the ring gear without the bendix engaged?) It's as if the teeth on the pinion need to be cut back a couple millimeters from the end of the pinion shaft.

My comment above regarding the mis-positioning of the power post wasn't an issue with interference, (as Tom states, it clears) I think it's just a sign that this is the wrong starter (compared to the pics that Sterling and Rob posted), why try to "make" it fit?

When you clocked your's Duc, did the starter sit outboard of the solenoid like in Rob's pic?

Adam,

I have no idea why they changed the poles position but all the starters I've gotten from Rog were off the top.

But the plate is off center. Rotating it 180 deg pushes it out a little bit and then it no longer hits the flywheel.

I'll give that a go Colin.. Can't see how it will change the backspacing..but if it works..then that will work for me...

Edit.. I see..it just moves it somewhat out from the flywheel..so it won't hit..

Alright.. after figuring out what Colin and Ducman were saying..got the mounting plate rotated 180 and was able to get it on the car. Wired it up, put in the new lightweight Odyssey battery, plugged in the brain, added the Torco oil...and crossed my fingers .

Fired right up and I actually jumped (forgot how loud open headers are ). Oil pressure pegged right away...so very happy... Now I need to finish the exhaust..and then do some tuning ... It's getting there... . The attached vid doesn't even express how loud it was haha...

Not sure why it's not showing..but click the vid link at the top of the window to see the vid...
