Keyless entry system, can i use 996 parts? (also flip keys)
Would anyone here pay $25 for one of these keys? I think they are pretty cool. My Euro BMW had a key like this and i loved it. Not sure how good this one could be at only $25. I'm sure its a china replica but the idea is cool.

On a side note, since i am asking, does anyone if you could take a key with built in transponder or remote and get it to work with an aftermarket remote locking mechanism?
One thing i really wish my car had is a remote unlock feature and i thouht about installing something but i am always turned off by the crappy transponder or remote that you need to add to your key so the whole thing becomes 2 parts. I would love to find a key with built in remote that would a) accept a porsche key blank and b) work with an aftermarket keyless entry system as our cars never had them.
Can this be done? Having the above said key be a flip type key would be great.
Anyone played around with this idea? Keyless entry would be very nice.

I have a flip key w/remote for my Mercedes S600. It's not very convenient since it is not drilled to attach to my other keys. I have a Commando aftermarket alarm with a separate key chain remote which I really like.
I would not find a flip key with no remote or transponder to be very useful, since I still have to drag around at least one or two other keys anyway.
Just my 2 cents

i get your point about the extra ring. However i have a set of keys that i use for the house, mailbox, and other stuff. But the Porsche key is alone and i have a key chain on it. So the key itself would be fine for me.
Would love to know if anyone can get an OE remote from say a VW, or Merc or something and tap into its transponder or have an aftermarket receiver that could pick up the new key's signal to unlock everything.
I did see a SEMA article in a magazine that had some alarm company (lets say Viper) that had a new remote design that was very nice. Looked like a flip type key. It had some chrome accents on it and looked to be very nice. However i still dont want the separates, would love to have an off the shelf key that can work for an aftermarket unlocking system that would also be made to accept a porsche key blank. I guess this is asking for allot, but maybe someone knows of a solution.

I wonder why the seller uses the same unflipped stock pic for BMW, Chevrolet, Porsche, Mitsubishi, Land Rover, Honda, Volvo, Toyota, Audi etc. My bimmer for example has a different dimension than my 928.

Hmm? The "Switch-Blade Key"! Yes they look sweet, but I'd be interested to know if they'd work the 928's ignition switch.
My company uses Dodge Sprinter Vans (Mercedes actually), that use the flip open keys with the remote for locking & unlocking the vehicle. However putting the keys side by side with my 78's key - the Van's flip out key is much thinner than the Porsche key.
That said I guess the real question is a Porsche key could be even made for the flip out key, so I'd call the seller to be sure before ordering.

I think you would need to find a flip core that would fit the Porsche blank. The Porsche key is pretty big (the blade itself) but if you really wanted to have this done you could machine the porsche key blank to fit the mounting requirements of the new flipping base.
Anyone know if you can get an OE like keyfob to work with an aftermarket keyless entry system?
If this flip key dosent work then I was also thinking of using a newer key, like a 997 or 987 key base which i presume has some sort of transponder in it.

Ok I found a picture of the new Viper alarm's remote. Its below.
Also Below is a keyless remote from a 993 and a keyless entry key from a 996. I like the 996 key. Could a 928 blank be made to fit the fob itself? Could the transmitter be made to work with your standard keyless entry box that gets mounted inside the vehicle. Being that we have an electronic hatch release this could be cool for that as well, to hook uo the release wire for the hatch to the box inside the car seems simple enough, and the 996 or boxster key comes in a 2 button version as well.

Ive now posted about this on the 996 board and would now like to investigate using the 996 issue key/remote with its alarm or keyless entry box and adapt it to work on the 928.
See the thread on the 996 forum or below for the new solution i am seeking.
"I had the idea of adding remote keyless entry to my 928 and came across 996 vintage keys for sale on Ebay. I know i can add a universal keyless entry system to the car for $50 and call it a day. But i wanted to avoid the separate fob that those kits require. I would like to have the key and remote in one such as the 996 and 986. I have found keys on Ebay and figured if i had to do machine work i would be willing to to get the 928 key plank to fit into the 996 fob. They maybe plug and play but at this point i doubt it. (Maybe someone can either confirm or deny this.)
My biggest question was about the electronics inside the car. I first asked about seeing if the transponder from the factory porsche key could be used to send a signal to an aftermarket keyless entry box. But I assume it wont which leads me to the next question.
Why not use a keyless or alarm box from a 996 and wire it up simply to deactivate the alarm and unlock the doors. The 928 also uses an electronic hatch release so if i got a 2000 and later 996 setup that had electronic hood release maybe i could also wire that into my car to pop the rear hatch.
My questions is what would this box cost, assuming its a stand alone unit? I am aware of the possibility that whatever controls this unlocking feature could be just a part of some larger altogether more complex and more expensive electronic component in which case i wouldnt bother. I am willing to goof around with the wiring and tapping into the factory alarm and the door locking if i can in fact get this to work.
The main objective is to get a keyless entry system integrated into the car and not have to have a key plus remote. Would love to use the later Porsche key/remote.
Anyone with experience in this field have any comments? Is this possible? I figured with the number of boxsters and 996's produced finding an alarm or keyless entry system wouldnt be very difficult. But getting it to work, that is my question.
Any thoughts, please contribute anything that may be of interest.
Thanks"

Forget it it isnt going to work for the 928 key or the remote.... sorry!
IMHO it an ugly looking key anyway....
Just do a nice looking fob on a generic KE system - its great once you have it and you worn't regret it...

Any suggestions for make for the KE system Alan?
I was looking at Viper and they have a GPS system that could be handy, until i realized that you have to continually pay for services month to month for monitoring. In that case i will go with Lojack in i want GPS tracking in the event that its stolen.
I figured this idea would be a no go but figured i would ask. I think the 2000+ porsches use an i-bus system for wiring or some optical stuff which would make it pretty much a no go.
The aftermarket route is by far the cheapest and easiest, there are kits on Ebay for $40. Pretty damn cheap if you ask me. Maybe i can cover the ugly plastic in leather from Paul C. Or do something trick with the remote.

many have used the commando KE (including me) - they have various fobs so check the diffferent models. They show up on ebay (new) and they also have their own site.

I noticed that the Viper product 211HV doesn't seem to have a remote truck release. If i am going to install this stuff that would be a requirement.
I will check out the commando stuff.
EDIT: The viper can open the hatch but the button is labeled "AUX" instead of having a trunk icon. Apparently it has the capability to control 2 aux functions.

oh really? Does your hatch use a mechanical release like the hood?
I thought they were all electronic
The keyless entry hatch release actually would be great for the non-alarm upper latch i now have on the car being that it came with an additional key that with a remote release i could pretty much throw in the tool box and not worry about anymore
