No easy method here. Mineral spirits and a crap load of scrubbing with brushes, tooth picks, then some more scrubbing and dousing and over and over! AKA: FUN!

Nice looking motor, Brendan.

I must have missed this in your other thread, but is this going to be a boosted 5.0 L?
I recall that you were going to do a stroker motor but then were selling your stroker crank, and those are stock rods and pistons, so must be stock displacement, right?

The engine block was hot tanked when I had the bores re-lapped for new rings. It was relatively clean then, and I simple greened and scrubbed it before assembly. The deck was machined smooth for the cometic head gaskets.

I have the stroker crank still, and may sell it. This is a 5L block for high boost, but I changed parts for better usage, like the beefier rods, arp rod bolts, I have arp head studs, 89 heads are thicker, S3 cams are a bit better for boost, and I coated the pistons and drilled the crank. Now I have mike Simard's block girdle and studs for the bottom, and I made sure the rod bearings have at least 2 thou or more. Cometic head gaskets, and the EFI stuff will allow me to run higher boost pressures, and I will be running the engine on E85, which will allow higher boost, more timing, all without any real fear of detonation or pre-ignition - both of which kill these engines.

Cast pistons may sound stupid, and it may prove to be, but with no detonation, and a cooler combustion temp with the ethanol, I don't see where they will break. Many newer boosted cars are running cast pistons because of their better tolerance levels. As long as you don't detonate, a block can stay together at MUCH higher power ratings. Don't shoot the messenger, but I want to do 700 to the wheels on this motor at least.

Very nice! Soooo any time frame on it being screwed together and running? It would be enough of a reason to make it down to Sharktoberfest just to see it completed.

Awesome. This is going to be a great year for high horsepower 928s and yours will be right in the hunt. Look forward to seeing it come together!

Thanks guys. Kind of a round about way of getting here, but thats how it always works out for me.

By Octoberfest, I should at least have something to tow there, if not drive. God, I hope I can drive it there. That would be pretty cool for me, as its been a while. This is everything I know so far. When the engine is done, I will plug it in with the clutch and fuel lines, even if its not wired up yet. Its the safest place to store an engine - in the car.

Is this going to be like Todd's with very high boost? What's supplying the boost? It looks like you're paying attention to details well. Keeping Porsche parts but picking the best year ones seems like a good plan.
What's the story with the piston coating? Is it compatable with the alusil?

Maybe it’s me but I would also be worried having all those extra nuts/bolts sitting in the bottom of the engine waiting for Murphy’s Law to kick in.

Nice work by the way!

The stuff I use is Loctite 262 non service hardening threadlocker. It needs to be heated to 250 degrees centigrade in order to liquify.
