Need for Speed!
Ok so heres the deal. Im new to Rennlist but not to fast cars. My 1982 shark is my 1st fast German car. I want to make this car extremely fast but what Im seeing are alot of parts for 85 and newer dual cam engines. Must I go for a swap or is there another way such as swapping heads and computer. My car is an LJET auto trans. Everything is stock it has 34000 original. I bought it from the original owner a few years back. I have yet to drive this one. I drove an '84 auto but it didnt feel that quick. Im sure it couldve used a tune up amongst other things. Thanks in advance for the help, Steve

82 automatic is the 3 speed auto.......220hp 265 torque is not super peppy by todays standards...
however one of motorsports supercharger kits will pump up the power nicely......
Yes you can get far more power out of the 5.0L+ 32V engines.....but the conversion will be very pricey...a 4.7L euro motor is a better option...since they were rated at 300 to 310hp depending on which one you get (CIS or LH)....the CIS would be much easier to swap out too.....if your really brave you could make a 5.0L 16V euro....with a good exhaust this can yield almost 340 crank HP when setup right.....

You have owned the car for a few years but never driven it. The 84 you drove had a bigger engine 4.7 liter and a 4 speed auto instead of your three speed which means if you thought it was SLOW you are going to really be disappointed with your 4.5 and three speed. Harsh reality is you still do not own a fast German car. The 200 horspower at the wheels in a 3,300 lb automatic tranmission car just don't get her done for most people.

OK so its not close to being the fastest by any means. Im willing to yank the engine complete rebuild or whatever. My question now, are the 32 valve engines readily available? Would I be better off with a 4.7 Euro engine?

I know Hacker will give me hell for this but:
Buy an '86.5 or newer, add boost and your done
Or boost your current car, then upgrade the suspension, then the brakes, and then your tranny, and then...
See the trend...
You'll end up putting the price of a good condition S4 and a s/c kit into your current car just to get what you would have in a second shark thats boosted

the car you have sounds like a nice car to leave stock.
If your really looking for speed , fix the one you have so its a nice driving car and either sell it or keep it if you can, since it has lo milage it is worth some cash.
Buy a 32 valve 86.5 or newer so you get the bigger brakes the older cars dont stop that well, and put your money into the newer car. Also consider finding a 5 speed as they seem to be a bit more fun to drive, as you can be more a part of the driving experience, thats my 2 cents

My advice is to find a 4 cam engine and drive that car, both automatic and manual versions first. Then decide. Drive an '86.5 and then an S4. I looked for a long time before deciding on my '86.5. Try to take it away from me now!
I was almost ready to close a deal on an '84 and an onlooker asked if I had driven a 32 valve car. He offered his as a sample. I was hooked and never looked back at the 16 valve cars. But that's me. You should try 'em all first.
Oh yeah. Keep my number too if you're so speed minded. Or PM me for it. Where do you live?

I had a nitrous setup on my 82. Lots of fun and a whole lot cheaper than a SCer, but you do have to feed the bottle.

The main reason that these guys are telling you to just move up to a 32v car instead of swapping in a 32v motor to your 16v car is that it's not just a bigger bore/stroke and a few more valves tacked on top. No, that would be simple - and 928s are not simple IMO.
Swapping a 32v EFI motor into a 16v CIS car means that ALL support systems have to get swapped also: fuel system (in-tank pump, lines, etc), electrical (all computers, wiring harnesses, etc), crossmember, exhaust, the list goes on. The number of changes between the two designs is serious stuff.
Now it's not impossible, heck several people on this forum have done it and gotten great results (the early cars are lighter than the later 32v cars). But it is a LOT of work, time, hassle, and $$ investment in parts that you will never get back because non-originalty decreases the market value of a Porsche.
FYI, the Euro motors make easier swaps but still are not huge power gains. You're still going to get smoked by modded cars.
That's why I posted the link to 928 Motorsports's superchargers. That's the simple and direct approach to horsepower. No affiliation BTW, just an appreciation for what they do.

Thank you all for your input. I think my best approach will be as listed above and that will be to look for a newer car. Ron I live in New York City. Now my question is, who wants to sell me their car?

Speed does caost ALOT. Which Im fine with. I want to put down 500 to the ground. I cant stand these ricer WRXs. They put down some serious power but its still a ricer. The reason I bought my car was to do a project. Its nice because of the originality of it and that Im the second owner. But its hard to realize that after all that it was a waste of money. Ilove the idea of a project but hate the fact that Im limited with the combo I have. I did stumble accross a black '84 today but its an auto and needs alot. On the plus side I do have all the factory shop manuals. All 8 of them from Porsche.
