Default intermediate clutch shaft clamping bolt torque

WSM manual says 58 ft/lbs but i recall going to 66 before. Curious if someone else thats done this wants to verify one of the above numbers.

Also I am debating on wether or not to use loctite on the bolts, either blue or red.

I see no reason for the higher torque. Maybe this is getting confused with the automatic front clamp. Same with the Loctite, especially red!

Bill, so 58 ft/lbs

what about the loctite, where do you stand on that? My old bolts have what appears to be teflon tape on them but i dont remember using loctite on them before.

You said you see no reason for the higher torque, and the loctite, especially red, so i take that as a no loctite necessary

I dont use loctite on flywheel bolts either but curious if some do for these clamping shaft bolts

I haven't known them to come loose. No Loctite. There's no real harm in Blue, but I don't see the need here.

FWIW, I did 58 on all three clamping bolts, no loctite, back in December. No problems in almost 20 miles of driving......

The WSM (page 30-03) says 58, but it also says 35, depending on the grade of the bolt. Is there a year-specific change to the hardware? The markings on my clamping bolts said grade 12.9 (they have a curious pale green color to them) so I went with 58 ft lbs.

are we talking about those allen head bolts that clamp the short shaft to the torque tube shaft?
im trying to picture another bolt that need that kind of torque? even that one, is just to keep the coupler from going fore and aft (its splined). the 13mm clutch bolts are too small for that kind of torque, so which part is it?

just curious

the coupler that goes from the TT shaft to the intermediate shaft which the clutch disc rides on.

Rob, I replaced the bolts as ive ulled the thing so many times the old heads were a little buggered for my liking. I was curious about the greenish color as well. Glad i'm not the only one

50ft-lbs seems excessive for those little bolts. no wonder they are jimmied up??
I wouldnt think there is any need to go over the stock spec. Ive always just tightened them "real tight" with a normal 3/8" drive and a 8mm (?) allen. If i was to guess, 40 to 50ftlbs max.

the bolts are pretty robust, perhaps you have the older or alternative ones as rob suggests.

Because they are larger you probably need more torque to stretch them so that they dont back out under vibration or something.

The only thing ive used loctite on is the small 10mm head bolt that is for the shaft sleeve. I learned this after the first time I had the clutch out and the bolts backed out, sheared off and i had a really annoying rattling from the now loose shaft sleeve.

thats a good idea. those things are small and are so critical.
