Default What's this part on my Steering Rack?

I went to pick up my rebuilt rack today and wanted to inspected it before I took it home. The rack was similar but not exact and I found this drain(??) that my old one didn't have (See Pic). Mine has an aluminium plugged there.
Some of the other difference was the hole cover where you put the centering bolt in was metal on their's vs. plastic on mine.

I think that's a transfer line -- allows un-pressurized fluid to move within the rack as you move it back and forth.

That's an older rack that was rebuilt. The later versions of the rack have the venting internal, no risk of contamination. Ask your vendor to try again, and have them replace those crispy/mushy old mounting bushings too. This looks a lot like a boneyard rust-oleum rebuld, I hate to say.

The black paint hides whether they used new hardware. Could be a lot of corroded plating under there. The rebuilt rack I got from 928 Intl was shiny bare metal and looked like new.

Thanks for the feedback.
I told them that I wasn't satisfied and told them to do it again. I'll keep you up to date. Thanks.

There are no real standards for the "rebuilding" industry seems especialy true with auto parts. We try to find a good supplier and stick with them even though they might charge a bit more.

What makes you think they will do it any better next time? You have what looks like an Autozone unit. Their rebuilder sprays them instead of refurbishing them. That's an outward indication of sloppy work. Why not give Jim a call instead?

I'm happy with mine, looked great when received and improved my steering feel tremendously.
