Default paint shop news today is not good.......(long)

well, after paint removal I took the car to my resto guy and the news is not good.

much more work to do, but time is not on my side. I had wanted to have it done in time to take it to SITM, but he's not promising that kind of schedule.

I still don't have it disassembled enough to his liking, and with only one day a week to devote to taking it apart, it's looking like I may not get it to him until sometime next month. I am making progress, today was removing the carpet, rear seats, rear quarters (they will be replaced anyway) and the removing the front bumper cover (it will be replaced) and headlights/mechanisms. I have taken over the spare bedroom with interior parts--the ones that have new leather on them, and the new carpet I just put in the car this past Fall. Thanks to Deb for allowing me the space in the house.....

Then there are the various issues with marker light, antennae, rear wiper, and rub strip holes. He wants to weld them up. So be it. It won't take him much additional time to do it, and it will come out better. closing the washer squirter holes in the replacement front bumper cover is going to be a challenge. The original bumper cover is damaged, so there is material that could be taken from it to close the holes, but how to do it right??? He said vulcanizing is the way to go, but it's beyond his shop's ability to do......

The rest of the interior is going to need to come out (I have spent months replacing much of it with newly reupholstered pieces), as well as the door panels, and the mirrors will come off (they will be replaced with aero's).

So now that I'm this far deep into this mess, I asked him about adding Louie Ott's NIzzzazzzz fenders, and he said you may as well just get that done now as well.

The one thing I'm really having anxiety about is the front windshield. There is surface rust in the upper window channel, and to get it out properly the glass will have to come out......Geeezzz I hope they can do it without breakage......

Other things to put on my list for replacement are door window trim/seals and and sunroof moulding/seal, rear hatch seal, and bumper cover rubbers.

There is good news in all of this. He's really impressed with how straight the car's panels are. The rust issues are not as devastating as we had originally assumed. No major issues with trying to straighten anything, just prime/block sand/repeat/repeat/repeat then paint/block sand/repeat/repeat then paint----Geez I lost track of how many times he went through that......

But then again, the HEMI Cuda in the shop right now looks like a gazillion bucks. Paint that looks soaking wet from a-far, and then up close looks like it's two miles deep.......

Sure would be nice to have my p-car look like that----

more pics-

Wow Russ, moving right along. That 928 is lucky to have you.

See if you can hitch a ride with another 928er to SITM. The next best thing to driving your own shark is hitching a ride in one. You should definitely be there, IMO. It would be a bummer not to see your car, I must admit I have a soft spot for it . Either way you should still attend.

Lot's of hard work you're putting in on your car, Russ. When it's done, it'll be a beauty done right!! Keep it up and thanks for the pics.

yeah... and it really sux 'cause I went ahead and registered......Dad doesn't think his is going to be ready either (he's doing the repaint thing as well, though not as extensive as mine).

On top of all this, my sister is getting hitched in May, which is going to take a lot of steam out of our (entire family is showing for this one....) travel plans.

As for hitching a ride, maybe just run over in the Caddy.....

Well, Deb and I were looking at it this way:

I can get more of the work done myself (lower cost---), and I won't be stressed out with trying to make a "date".

She hates that I get torqued up about making certain schedules, and then things don't quite work out that way. Says I'm getting too old to run the kind of schedules I run with work, so the car is supposed to be a relaxer for me... HA!

Paint is just not something you can rush.......

The headlight squirter holes are no problem. Somefiberglass and 3M bumper repair two-part did the trick just fine for me. Its like the original bumper.

Taking it all apart definitely yields the best results and now you know why good paint jobs cost money, make sure you remove the black trim around the door windows.

Looking forward to seeing more progress pics !!

I would use duramix 4058, best product for that purpose I have ever used.

That's exactly what I said in my start of this thread!!

Unfortunately, it's just another item on the list (which for some reason, keeps getting longer----)

Thanks guys, appreciate the good thoughts!

Search on Sharktoberfest & windshield, and give Michelle a call at our new favorite glass supplier. She had options on a whole lot of Sigla windshields for our event late last year, and had some uncommitted last I spoke with her. She can have it drop-shipped to a warehouse hear you for your own local installation. The Good News is that it has no antenna in it, since I'm pretty sure yours came with the rear quarter antenna. Just another hole to weld up, so you can put in the later S4/GT/GTS roof antenna while all the wiring and interior bits are out of the way. This moves the windshiled removal issue completely off your table. Plus you'll get a nice new no-pits factory-origina windscreen tyhrough which to observe the reflection on your freshly-painted hood.

I say this from first hand past experience...you should consider what your costs are to do all of this work to completion. I have seen a few of your posts and it looks like you have already spent $1000's on your car. Way more than it will ever be worth. Granted, I know its a personal thing, but if you look at the money you've spent, you could have gone out and bought a pristine GT or even a GTS when it's all over with that you really wouldn't have had to do a thing too. Trust me when I tell you it will be cheaper in the long run.

I bought my 82 years back for under $10K...I sold it for under $10K I put $40K AT LEAST into it!!!

Just a friendly suggestion to THINK before you go any further. I know I will never do THAT again.

When I rescued my 928 I went through this. I know i put more in than its worth but i know it was done right. I found an older bumper cover without washer nozzles, but was not savvy enough to delete the strips. It took 3 months with a dedicated 1 man shop, and a butt load of color sanding.

True I'm sure. But I will say one thing, I have never ever seen a more beautifully done '82. When mine was still a basket case i used that car for an example of Cup II's v.s. Twists. Oh, and b.t.w. my wife says you have good taste. She loves the way you done up the GTS.
