I'm installing a new wizbang head unit/GPS (Pioneer AVIC-D3) and it wants a wire from the reverse light and a wire from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor?).
Can any one tell me where to get to these two signals on a 1988 S4 5 speed?
Thanks!
Unfortunately on a manual transmission car there is no reverse signal at the fuse panel. You will need to wire from the Black/Blue wire from the reverse switch on the transmission. Connects behind the plastic cover above the battery box and also behind the tool panel at the rear.
So, i wired my reverse camera power and the reverse sensing wire to the black/blue wire behind the tool tray, right before the plug to the relay and it all worked as it should. Then, it stopped. I can wire the camera directly to a +12 source and the reverse sensing wire on the radio to +12 and it works fine. So, I assume I blew a fuse or relay, but I can't find it. Everything else seems to work. Reverse lights still work. The other wires at that relay still work as I believe they are for the rear wiper and it still works.
So, anybody know what to check to re-supply power to that black/blue wire?
May I butt in with my own question? Lizard replaced my transmission with an 89 5spd unit. Where's the pickup ... on the trans? Wheels? Because I get a speedo fluctuation when I drive over bumps in the road ...

note to self the radios likely want the speed sensor input so that it can disable the video function if you are driving. I think.
I think it would be the other way around: reverse signal turns the camera on, no?
It probably just uses the VSS for displaying ground speed, in case of GPS signal loss like in cities or tunnels.
To the OP (or rather JPBNY): Sorry, I can't help you on these. I'm sure you can tie in back on the tranny where the original signals come from, but I don't know where inside the car you'd get them.

Mine wanted me to hook up a cable to the parking brake in order to turn on the DVD player. I just connected it to ground instead... works fine (anytime).

Sorry to dig up your post from the past - but I am trying to wire my reversing camera in to my 1988 S4 Auto and I cannot see any Black/Blue wires behind the tool try at all? Can you help point me in the right direction?
Thanks
