We are lucky that these tanks are plastic,

go to a 924/944 with the steel tank and you get tons of large rust particles which take out the pumps.

What seems to be at the bottom of most 928 tanks is just dirt, and sometimes an awful lot of it. Of course, my tank was spotless when I opened it up at about 150K miles to check the in-tank pump, which was completely in-tact as well. My car is blessed.

when you get your new pump it has a waring about replacing the in tank filter screen for the warranty to be valid, of course this means unscrewing the big nut on the tank outlet and this can then start a leak of its own. So possible you can can inspect the intank screen from above?

cleaning the tank is always a good idea on a 20+ year old car...BUT with the known weakness of the 928's gas tank at the 2nd pump or "strainer" it is a risky proposition....when my fuel pump died (on a full tank no less) I thought about changing the strainer since I don't have an in tank pump....but a knowledgeable 928er talked me out of it unless I wanted to spill all the gas and buy a new tank......

Thanks Stan. Guess I should order the sending unit also, and avoid running out of gas again.

Knowing you have plenty of gas in your tank is a beautiful thing, beats trying to guess how many miles you might have driven, you didnt mention the fouled up level reading.
So does the low fuel light come on? This is the your secondary low fuel warning, if neither one is working then it might be something other than the sender, you might check the top of the tank sender connections

I have only ran two tanks through since i bought the car. The first tank, the gauge went down below a quarter and the light came on. The second tank was strange. It was raining and I was on the freeway running between 60 and 70mph. I began to experience what I thought was a miss (momemtarily cutting off but not lowering my speed appreciably) and assumed it was related to the rain and an electrical consequence. This went on for about seven or eight miles. I pulled off the freeway, the gas guage was reading between a 1/2 and 1/4 but decided to gas up. When I pulled the cap I noticed there was a lot of vacumn build up and after filling it ran fine until The next day and 50 miles of driving, mostly freeway. When it quit this time it just went dead at speed, so the pump had come to a sudden stop.
The PO had mentioned that the guage was not reliable. But no further detail, although he also mentioned the fuel filter had just been changed.
