Thanks Roger. that is why i requested the original Beru set from you. thanks for your advice and wisdom.

Morgan, I already removed the MAF from the sytem and that pretty much eliminated that from the list of "could be's"....

should know more thursday evening or friday mid day depending on what time the new stuff gets here thursday.

thanks all

You mentioned in your first post that the Digi Dash flashed "Save Power" - was this a one time occurrance or does this repeat?

This message means your alternator is not generating power. In this mode you are running on battery alone - and the charge indicator (red) in the voltage gauge should illuminate.

If you have a dead cell in the battery or connection issue anywhere on the power supply paths this alone can cause the engine to run poorly... I'd investigate battery voltage at rest as well as system voltage when running (barely) what voltages do you get - measure both at the front jump post.

If your 'at rest' battery voltage is below 12.5v and if your running system voltage is even lower - you need to investigate the battery and or alternator...

Thanks Alan.
that "Save Power" happened just one time when the car was on the verge of stalling out.
it has not happened again and the car was idling for 30 minutes or so last night as i was checking various items.

although i cannot physically get to the battery right now and can't check it i will replace the battery this evening when i get home and get that rear hatch open. a new battery is always a good thing and will give me a new base line of replacement time since i am not certain how old the current battery is.

The battery is accessible with the hatch closed. Set your rear seats down and pull the tool panel, rear carpet and spare ...

well duh heinrich..

i don't feel like lying flat on my stomach testing, removing and re-installing a battery.
i'm not that lazy.
i'll get that hatch open and resolve that issue this evening while i'm waiting on parts.

thanks for the advice. if i were broke down on the side of the road that is a great thing to know.
i got the car down at the house and i'm waiting on parts i'll go ahead and resolve the hatch problem and utilize the hatch access as intended when things are working correctly. that makes sense to me.

i'm learning tons of cool tricks and bits of information off this one post.

we got us some smart people here on this forum...

Well if you just want to test voltage there is a battery terminal in the engine compartment - bolted to the fender just behind the radiator & top hose on the paseenger side. It may be covered with a plastic cover. This is battery +ve - good place to measure.

Yes you need to figure out the hatch though!

Generally a car doesn't go from running great to barely running from deteriorating plug wires. A rough idle, maybe. A miss while accelerating, maybe. But to go from running strong, to running on four cylinders would be really unusual.

You have mentioned a few things that have me thinking charging system. With a stuck hatch and no access to battery it's tough, but I think i would do something to check the alternator output. I'm lazy so I would probably hook the charger to the jump terminal and see what happens, but that's just me.
If the plug wires don't do the trick maybe some one here, who actually knows 928's, will suggest a proper way to verify you're getting sufficient current.

If the coils weren't mounted right under the edges of the hood, this would be much less of an issue.

BTW, MAFs do get tired, and can rob you of throttle response and HP even when working. My philosophy is fix one problem at a time, go from simple to complex. Plug wires would be first. Also look at the caps, check the insides to see how old they are. With these super high output electronic ignitions, you will continue to get spark right up until the car refuses to run. I doubt they are shorting or cracked, but they may just be in need of renewal. And while I don't actually know 928s like some, I have owned and driven a number of them. One had a four cylinder miss that turned out to be plug wire related. Another refused to run at all due to bad wires. Being who I am, I did replace all the wear items in one service.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

DANIEL,
you were the first one to respond to the cry for help. and after all the troubleshooting over the last couple of days it will be cool if what you recommended is actually what the problem is.

thanks for your post and experience.

thanks guys and maybe this will fix it.
The full set should be BERU and come with the spacers, all ready to pop in. If the ones I linked don't, keep looking [Oh, I see Roger has the full BERU - that's what I would go with].

And I mentioned to check the battery as well, noting the a problems a low battery caused for me once.

hey guys guess what? got home today and went to work on hatch. for grins i started her up just to see and she runs much better with minimal miss and just enough slug on mashing the go pedal to notice.
we have had a really dry day today and i kept her in the shop covered last night. i still see fireflies and i still have the broken plug end connector. but it is running better. i am thinking the combination of bad wires and a bunch of moisture/humidity & 2 full washes magnified the problem.

battery tested 11.6 at the battery so as i said earlier, new wires, new plugs, new battery and we will see if i'm off haulin some 928 *** again..

again i want to stress how much i appreciate you guys helping me with my problem. it makes me feel so much better knowing other people care enough about this car to help brothers and sisters out.

I just dove in to my T-Belt/WP job this evening, and quickly figured that it couldn't be a better time to replace my original Beru's with Roger's economy set (my ends are in fine shape). I'd already decided this, but I discoved that the left coil wire was twisted and the insulation/jacket was cracked all to hell. That turned a suggested maintenance item into a needed item.
It's a wonder that my car wasn't running like Daymon's with a coil wire like this.

Roger, you have PM.

J.P. best of luck on your TB/WP effort. better safe than sorry. i'm learning slowly but these items are easy to fix, parts are available BUT if you don't fix 'em you're screwed.

i'm going thru a dozen or so of wally's list and making me a good check list.
