Post Hard start ?????

Hello...I have had my Shark for a little over a year.It has no modifications..I have 8 cars so I don't drive it very much. I try to drive it once a week.
When I go to start it cold it fires right up for about 2 seconds after cranking over about 5 times but then dies. This happens usually 3 or 4 times until it finally stays running. I never touch the gas .I have found it takes longer to start if I do. When it is warm I have no problem. Is this normal ??? It has been this way since I brought it home. And I'm starting to wonder if something is wrong.ANY ideas would be appreciated.

The '9th' injector on your CIS-equipped engine is not functioning properly.

Do a search here for 'thermo time switch (time-switch, timeswitch)', 'cold start injector' and 'warmup regulator'.

I think you'll get some good archived info on how to correct your problem.

Hey Randy, I was looking for the 9th injector and the thermo time switch on my euro 79 and I cant seem to find it. Isnt the 9th injector at the front of the intake manifold. Mine has the hole for it but there is a plug in it instead of a fuel line. Is that because its a euro car?? Also the thermo time switch, i cant seem to locate it.

Curt..

Curt,

The plug you are looking at is probably the outlet for a vacuum line used on the automatics. It is plugged on the 5 speeds. The cold start injector is just below and to the right (when facing the engine) and has a large vacuum hose running to it from the auxillary air regulator. There is also an electrical connection on the cold start valve.

The start then die symptoms is more typical of a bad auzillary air valve. Another possible area to check is the resistors on the fenderwell/panel in front of the coil. If the engine dies immediately after releasing the key from the crank position, the high resistance line (or resistor) to the coil is bad.

Dennis is correct.

In this pic of my engine, you can see the fitting for the auto trans, with the steel line that goes off to the left of the intake. The '9th' injector is located to the right and below:

That fuel line to the front of the intake plenum is always pressurized with fuel, however the brown plastic thing (the cold start valve) seen in the pic is an electrically operated valve that closes when it receives a signal from the 'thermo-time switch' (Porsche's terminology - not visible in this view).

Tell me then we'll both know <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> !

It appears to be some sort of temp sensor. The wires from it dive into the main wire harness along the right (passenger) side of the engine compartment.

Perhaps it is one of the sensors that triggers the auxiliary cooling fan, though I've never seen anything similar on other cars of the same vintage.

Anyone have a clue?

Randy,

It does look like a thermocouple lead for a temp sensor. Does yours have an addon fan? BTW I like your metal braided hose cover on the AAV inlet. Are you going to cover them all?

Dennis - I have the stock viscous-coupled mechanical fan and the stock electric auxiliary fan.

That hose is actually true braided type. I couldn't find regular hose in the correct size so used that instead. I shrink-wrapped the ends to keep them from fraying.

Dave 'olias' (if you were 'rolias' you would be a backwards 'sailor' ) - did you find anything helpful yet?
