3) Believe it or not, the belt wore a slight groove in the backside of the tensioner arm!
4) The tensioner roller is bad, very bad - when I spin it, it squeaks and has a rough feel to it
5) The tensioner boot crumbled when I removed the tensioner arm
6) The grounding strap was broken

And finally, the waterpump is a Laso unit....

I will be replacing all bushings, rollers, etc. to get the TB system back on spec.

Should I leave the waterpump in or replace it now with a "non-Laso" rebuilt or new unit?

Pictures to follow - thank you for your input!

Hi Bill,

I do not know. The previous owner only had the car slightly less than 2 years and minimal service records. During that time, he said the engine was replaced with another that had 53K on it. When Mike and I went to inspect it, it started and ran. The TB light came on after 3 minutes or so - at that point we knew the TB covers had to come off.

I initally purchased the car to be a donor "parts car" for my other '86.5 but, upon closer inspection, both Mike and I thought it could be a solid daily driver after the usual maintenance was done.

The engine is a M28/44; serial# is 81G06086.

I think the engine has low miles as the backside of the intake valves have no deposits. We noticed this after removing the intake runners.

Is there any way to find out, based on the VIN or engine serial#, if the engine is original to the car?

Adam
