Performance potential
What are the 928's capable of?? I know that is a hard question to answer, and I am sorry to ask it, but I want to get an idea of what I could expect from a 928 (let's say S4) should I purchase one. Stock and modified on a budget (like there is such a thing )
Thanks

Anything you want.
The only limit is how deep are your pockets.
Devek's white car is suppost to be amazeing. A 6.5 liter engine. They build a stoker crank and kit that'll add about a liter to your displacement. Also, they build headers, and the like.
<a href="http://www.devek.net" target="_blank">www.devek.net</a>
Forced Air Systems of Texas produces a kit based around a Vortex supercharger, good for 400 hp. This is only good for the LH-jetronic cars though. It's suppost to be pretty much a bolt on deal.
<a href="http://www.f-a-s-tonline.com" target="_blank">www.f-a-s-tonline.com</a>
There's suppost to be a car out there that has the Vario Cam tech similer to a 968. If the 968 engine is anything to go from, the 4 cylinder 3.0l engine is suppost to be good for 240 hp. Maybe an 8 cylinder like that? Should be fun. Sorry no address, I lost the web site.
There's a company called Renegade Hybrids. They sell a kit to put a chevy small block in a 924, 911, 914, and 928. Doesn't make much sence if you ask me, unless you like to tinker, and have a destoryed motor in your 928.

If it's OK by thge law, you might be able to get away without a smog pump or a cat. Some owners have replaced the mechenical fans of the earler cars with electric ones.
If you've got a US 4.7l engine, you can try to install the euro parts. The Euro 4.7l was good for 300, or 310, depending on the year.
There's a guy on this board thats trying to put an Eaton M90 on his car for $1500.
Nitrous is always an option, if your willing to do that.
Look at the Specs. and Technical section of 928 Specialists to see what the cars are capible of stock. <a href="http://www.928gt.com" target="_blank">www.928gt.com</a>
What you can do to your car depends on what car you've got, what kinda of pocket book you've got, and what your willing to do for it. What kind of a budget are you talking about?

If your looking to match the stoplight performance of your Z28, forget it. The 928 was never intended to be a 0-whatever car. It shines in the 40-60, 60-80 etc... It can be made to be pretty quick, but it will cost some $$$.

Well, I would be selling my Z to obtain the 928, and although I realize it was never meant to lightning fast, but instead a quick Grand Touring car, I would like to know how it pairs up with different cars. I know I would still be in a Porsche, but I would feel kinda bad losing to a near stock 5.0 mustang. I have not driven a 928 yet, so this is why I am asking.

My '86 S will run circles around my cobra. 0-60 the mustang will have the edge, after that it will be all 928. Put those same two cars through the corners and the mustang will never stand a chance. The '03 Cobra might give the 928 some issues since Ford put a roots blower on it and enhanced the suspension, but due to poor aero' they limited top speed to 150.

While I understand your Z28, as my brother has a 97 that I have driven extensively, I cannot comment on the amoun of power you are making, or whether you have gone through an half shafts or drive shafts.
What I can say is that the difference between the viceral feel of a Z28 and the feel of a 928 from pretty much any ytear as long as it has comperable power, is truly amazing.
While it is true that the 928 is nota 0-60 or whatever car, it is also tru that if you were to purchase a 928, and then put the amount of money that you have in the Z, then you will have 500rwhp. There are individuals out there that are pumping that much out of Supercharged 928s with no other mods other than maybe the possibility of blowing up the TT and transmission. You have that problem on the Z at that power level too anyway...

It all depends on what type of 928 you buy and what kind of money your looking to throw into her.
First of all, I have never been beat by a stock 5.0/4.6 or Cobra, as a matter of fact - I had one for lunch yesterday (4.6). (All Freeway challenges - non 1/4 mile) Being that I am previous 5.0 owner, I am not biased in the slightest.
I would do the research and before you plan to build - see if there is already one built. Gas N Go so speak.
As marc from Devek stated in one the threads (Supercharging for under 1500) - He has a 1000hp Twin Turbo 928 motor ready for the taking, but where/when are you going to use such extreme power - As a daily driver?.
The 2-8 has more potential than most realize, it's up to you to see where you want the HP to stop at.

My wife drives a 95 Mustang GT with the 5.0L. While it is a nice car, it can't touch my 928 in acceleration, cornering, top speed or braking. She had a '88 928 before the Mustang. She now wants back into a 928.

Most 928's are capable of eating most anything on the road up to a buck fifty. It really shines from 90 to 140. These are GT cars of the highest caliber. Built to cruise in triple digits all day with tunes and A/C.
HP for these beasts range from mild to wild. Strokers, supercharging, standard hot-rodding all available constrained only by your budget.
Great brakes. Superbly well mannered in the handling department. Totally addictive.
Get one. Soon.

Before you sell your tricked out Z28, do yourself a huge favor and drive a 928 first. I'd suggest anything 1987 and newer since horsepower is apparently important to you.
With that said, the 928 will feel like the proverbial slug compared to what you have now, horsepower-wise.
It all depends what you're currently looking for in a car.
If you want straight-line performance, you're looking at the wrong car. And I don't care whether you're already doing 40 or 60 mph and nail it, the car isn't all that fast. Especially compared to what you have right now.
On the other hand, if you want a smooth ride that looks cool, the 928 is what you're looking for.
Don't make the same mistake I did and buy an automatic; look, and keep looking, until you find a sweet 5-speed.
If you're looking to mod it for more power, the first thing to go is the cams:
<a href="http://www.928developments.com/campacs.htm" target="_blank">http://www.928developments.com/campacs.htm</a>
Those bad boys are two grand a pop unlike our Chevy small blocks. Keep in mind the '85's and later have four camshafts, thus the price.
Hey, it's a great car. Mine is bone-stock, and I plan on keeping it that way to preserve it's 'vintage'.
Keep us posted and let us know what you decide.

The 928 will do that, and go 130 all day.
0-60 mid 6's
top out at in the 150's
And turn Heads.
