R&R of combination switch anyone? (FIXED!)
My turn signal canceling failed suddenly recently (a definite snap was heard/felt).
The combo switch (turn signals/hi lo beam/wash/wipecruise/OBC) is riveted together. I have taken it apart and modified it to screw back together...
However the plastic 'wings' on the turn signal stalk internal end that the return spring attaches to are broken off and I cannot JB weld them back on. It does work initially but breaks quickly with the heavy offset spring pressure...
Looks like I need a whole new switch OR a new stalk part with fresh wings/spring...
Given the scarcity (& $450+ cost) of new 4 stalk combo switches I'm wondering if I can just replace the turn signal stalk from the commonly available 2/3 stalk model.
I'm getting proficient at putting it back together!
As far as I can see it looks like the base part of the switch (& turn stalk) is the same in all cases - anyone BTDT before?
Anyone have any luck with other solutions? - my white nylon part and its positioning springs are just fine. I believe this same basic type of combo switch was also used on VW & Audi's but I don't know which ones...?
To eliminate the rivets - I drilled them, out - then countersunk the metal top plate holes & installed self tapping countersunk screws - works well and is flush - but has been mainly pointless so far... since no fix...

Alan-
IF someone doesn't pipe up with a VW/Audi part number that'll work in place of the Porsche part:
I have no direct help, other than your request jogged a memory from wasting Friday nights on Ferrarichat years ago. There's a user named Verell who is manufacturing a replacement stalk for 8 cylinder Ferraris
See: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21548
You may need to register to see it, or maybe not. He's got a bunch of posts on the technology of making plastic molds, etc. Fascinating stuff, at least to a no- nothing non-engineer like me.
His solution/method might give you some ideas, or he can branch off into Porsche parts. Since replacement stalks are still technically available, the market may not bear repairing old ones, but eventually his ingenuity will be the only way.
FWIW.

If you can't find the stalk, you can get the complete switch used for $100 from DC Automotive. Or try 928Intl, for that matter.

I believe the 4 stalk versions are 928 specific - there is a 911/993? version that looks the same but has a different part number.
The 4 stalk ones are much rarer and more $$$.

Alan - what is your fourth stock? I just replaced mine, but it was a 3 stock (trun sigs, wipers, and cruise) - I assume "stock" means the number of levers? I have an 86 MY. My turn signal cancel wasn't working on my original combo switch, but fxed it with some balck tape on the tab inside the steering wheel. The tab inside the combo switch was ok tho. Still, other things weren't working properly, so I replaced the combo switch with another, used one. That fixed some things, but it doesn't fully engage the turn signals now, unless I put the lever in a certain position just so Anyway, I'll be going back in to fix that soon...

Good news, the fourth stalk ... for the trip computer ... is fastened to the standard switch by two screws, has a separate wire harness, and thus can be removed and re-installed on any standard switch from the same era (i.e. a switch from a 964, 944, etc.). So just get a standard switch off of EBay, install the trip lever and you're back in business.

Tom - that is true - but it bolts onto a threaded/folded extension of the switch backing plate which is different for these models - so I'd have to dissassemble both switches anyway to fit the newer type backing plate (from my switch) to a new 3 stalk switch...
It seems its as easy and cheaper to get a 2 stalk switch and reuse only the turn signal stalk - as long as it will fit. Hence still the question is that part in fact the same on all years...?
I did note that while similar not all Porsche switches have the same connectors esp for the wash/wipe (e.g. headlight wash & less wiper speeds & cruise connectors)

My 968 had the threaded, folded extension and I think most combo switches of that vintage did too. Porsche tended to share many common parts across the various models and would have no reason to make two different versions of the backing plate.

Shouldn't the more acurate terminology be '4-position stalk', or '4-function stalk'?
Maybe even a 'quad-function stalk' if we want to be pedantic.
It is just one 'stalk', after all.
It certainly isn't a 'peduncle'.

1) Wash & Wipe etc
2) Turn & Hi/Lo beam
3) Cruise
4) OBC info Switch
Technically the OBC switch is a screw on addition - but you get the idea - you buy them all together & when you disassemble it the wash/wipe & turn/beam bits all fall out at the same time...
