Default What in the world have I found?

I don't have a photo, I can get one if necessary, but during tear down for paint on the 90, I found what appears to be a hydraulic pump/motor inside the drivers side rear wheel well, behind the rear wheel well liner. I think it may have been placed there to make the rear bumper cover removal more difficult, but I fooled it.

It has a small reservoir with a red cap, like a break fluid reservoir, but I can't immediately see what it feeds, if anything.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be, it appears to be factory.

Thanks
Rod

Could be the PSD control unit - was standard from MY 90. Operates on brake fluid which should be flushed every two years or so.

Best of luck with the repaint.

Well, they certainly put it in a place that makes it easy to service. ;-) I guess I better "flush" it before I put it all back together. I'm relatively certain it's never been done - but it's only 17 years, so why worry.

Thanks everyone, what would I do without you all.
Rod

Yep, I found it D39 202a in the WSM

You'll need to use a "hammer" to flush the unit.

Yup thats the PSD unit...or traction control......standard on all 1990+.....you should flush it out...which is a PTIA without a hammer to use the pump to pump out the fluid...it can be done, its just a pain....

You do not need The Hammer to flush the PSD. All you need is Adobe Acrobat:

For the PSD flush, only use ATE brand DOT4. Use either "Super Blue" or "TYP 200". The best prices are on eBay.

The viscosity of DOT3 is just too thin.

Borland-

Thanks for the tip- when I pulled the transmission, I disconnected the PSD line where you suggested - it drained about 8 oz or so, quite a bit. Upon reassembly I just refilled the reservoir to the 'full' line but had not bled it (I've only driven about 5 miles since all the work just to make sure I didn't seriously F anything up) When I re-bleed the PSD I'll change it all out with Super Blue in it.

Borland, why do you insist on ATE?

I could see going with the very best if it dosen't get flushed in another 10-15 years which is what i bet happens with most of the cars that came with this.

Any specific property in the ATE stuff thats missing from a conventional DOT 4?
