Default Rear Hatch Lock

Bill Ball a little help please.

Could you please advice how to remove the hatch tongue and lock from the rear hatch on 1990 S4.

I have read the WSM and the description is a little light on detail and I have done a search on the forum and I have read you excellent description on re-keying, however, I could not locate how to safey remove the mechanism and lock. Could you please advise the step process that needs to be followed to remove it safely, especially disconnecting the wiring etc.

The insert in the lower part of the hatch lock mechanism finally fell to pieces and I'm currently fabricating a new nylon insert, which will be made up of sections that will be held in place by silicone sealant and the aft tapered section will be like a "key" stone insert. I already made this aft section and fitted it 6 year ago and left the side section in situ.

Now I'm fabricating the side and front sections and I need the tongue removed to do the fit up on the bench prior to installation.

Thanks,

I wish to remove the l

When mine was giving me alignment issues (cracked body casting) I replaced the tongue side with a non-alarm unit. By removing the left side bottom of hatch trim cover you can get to the alarm wiring connector. Undoing the two bolts/cap screws will enable you to drop the unit, and by rotating it back towards you the lock entry part will come out of its grommet on the top face of the hatch.
I hpe thats what you meant anyway? I have the old tongue unit spare, if the nylon out of that is any use to you?

John,
Yes and thanks, that the information I require.

Once I have it removed I will inspect the tongue for cracks etc., and advise.

Good to hear that the HVAC system is now operational.

My lock removal thread was linked near the end of the lock anatomy thread.

Look at post 7 in this thread:
