I think he is kidding, about the expert part.

I do think that many 928's sell for crazy insanely low prices, but nothing I have thought of yet except dumb luck right time and right place gets one. Semi decent cars at low prices sell within hours or minutes of network accessible listing, only off grid deals last long enough to scratch your ear.

I bought my 86.5 for $1000... It had TBF... But I did drive it home.

If you were building a racecar (rat), I suppose you could sell all the interior parts, AC parts, and stereo. Then try to repair, or replace the block.

In fact, buying a TBF car might be the best way to get in under 1000 for a running car. IF the interior is mint... YMMV!!!

You seem pretty cheerful about it, what else matters?

I think the real question is how many $1000 928s does it take to end up with one really nice one built from all the parts or proceeds from parts....

Hmmm. A better question is what is the cheapest a reliable 928 can be had for? NO SUCH THING!!! TRICK QUESTION!!!

I agree. I learned this with a Ford Falcon and my Galaxie. Paint, body work, rust will eat up a budget way faster than mechanical problems, especially on domestics where replacement mechanical parts are dirt cheap. If you need to paint, though, and take it down to metal and find massive amounts of bondo, fiberglass and rivets holding the body together, get rid of it fast.

I paid about $10k for paint, chrome and rubber on my Galaxie - it was rust-free. $850 for the car and about $2.5k for a blueprinted, rebuilt engine installed. My Falcon's frame was crumbling with rust and the fenders were bubbling over bad bondo work, so I dumped it before I sunk any real money in.

Rust in the suspension and frame, or corroding everything also scare the crap out of me from a cost and complexity perspective.

Of course, my 86.5 will get painted in the next couple of years...
