What sort of 928 can be bought for <$1000?

Running?
Easily fixable?
Reliable?
Pretty?
Paint; Interior; Suspension; Engine; Trans; Lights; Electronics?

If I wanted to buy a 928 for myself as a daily driver, and restore it with the least possible amount of expense. Say my budget for restoral is $1000. What would I be looking for? And, what would my chances be?

A similar scenario is can you get a 928 ready to compete in the "2008 Challenge". Its held by Grassroots Motorsports. The idea is you put together your "race" car for $2008 or less and compete in three events: . Drag, autocross, and "Concourse".

You're allowed to buy and sell parts, but your net expense must not be over $2008 (for this year). You're suppossed to document everything.

Pretty fun.

I've been wondering if its doable with a 928. I think it is. So, by extension, I think you can buy a 928 and get it running as a more or less daily driver for $1000 or less, but your chances of doing so are slim.

Andre, a starting bid of $1k on Ebay doesn't count. I guarantee that that car will not sell for $1k.

I have seen a few sub $1k 928's. CeeDee had three of them. One was a Euro S 5-speed that had a trashed interior and a dinged up body. This car actually had some 16" phone dials on it. I tried to talk him into tracking that car but he managed to damage the engine somehow. He also had a blue US 1982 model that was in decent shape. The interior was very rough but the car seemed to run well. The paint compounded out pretty well on this one. The third was one that he sold to another FL 928er that will remain nameless. It was that POS gold automatic 1983 that you saw at the British pub that night in Kissimmee. It was actually in the best shape of all of them before he decided to start stripping parts off of it. All three of these cars were sub $750 cars.

Thanks for the input gentlemen ... Shawn no, I was approached by someone asking if he could get a good 928 for 1k and I said no. I think it's highly unlikely that a 1k 928 will cost less than 4k to make it a so-so car ...

I'm sure you can find one to buy for $1k or less, but as we know that's just a small down-payment towards total cost of ownership, especially if you expect it to get you somewhere and back safely. Cheap tires alone are $4-500/set. Add some more basic stuff like brakes, battery, and a usable driver's seat, and blow purchase budget by 100%. That's before you open the hood.


There are cheap 928's, and there are bargain 928's. Hard to believe, but in my limited experience they are never the same car unless you are looking at donor cars to support another project.

I've purchased quite a few sub $1k 928s, I wouldn't consider any of them road worthy without at least $2k of work

Well I purchased my very rough 82 for $1,000. On the bonus side it has a 5 speed, limited slip, and ran but did not drive very well. Over the next few weeks I shopped carefully for a set of new tires and brakes, also installed a timing belt and water pump so my $1000 928 turned into $2000. This is the most reliable car that I have ever owned and really just drove it for the next two years. After that the car has slowly turned into a track car, but is still street legal. Right now I am in the process of painting it with future plans for more performance parts. Like I said before it is the best car that I have ever owned. Joe

Bought my '82 5-speed w/comp pkg for $500. The owner had rebuild the trans less than 2500 miles prior and had a timing belt, water pump, front seal service less than 500 miles prior to purchase. The car has documented miles at 110K and all work was done by well known Bay Area 928 shops. The body is straight but the paint is shot, the interior is decent but the leather needs a redye and the dash leather is pulling from the defrost vents.

The car was non-running due to a bad throwout bearing but after that repair I've had no serious issues just little naggly stuff. I will say it is amazing at how quick this 500 car turned into a 3000 car even with all the prior service and rebuilt tranny.
