bargain vs. Cheap
Thanks Nosnow,
Based on your thread it is safe to say that you have done exactly what I would like to do, as stated by another poster- obtain a "bargain 928", and turn it into a running car. In my case I would just use it as a weekend driver.
The question here is, can I find a bargain 928. The good news is that Southern California has a quite a few 928's popping up on craigslist.
Thanks Heinrich for posting my seemingly ridiculous presumption...,

I thought I got the best deal on the planet getting a (barely) running '85 for under $4k.
Then someone near here got a running 86.5 for under $3k. Both required at least $2k just to get them running safely and relatively smoothly.
I think it would be the rare seller that would let go anything with the 'Porsche' nametag for under $2k, but even more so for one that runs.

YES,
But you need to be at the right place and the right time.
I gave $1,000 for the '78 Euro
It had just had the forward control arms replaced. New brakes and rotors added, the heads were just rebuilt, new TB, new WP, etc.... All money poured in before I bought it!
I added the Fuel pump, coil, FP relay, tie rods, new tires.
It is my DD and not bad for <$2,000!
It can be done.

You definately have to be in the right place and be looking in an area that is pleantiful with 928s. I had been looking over a year and was resigned to spending 2-3K when during my normal searches this car popped up. I bought it based on the pictures thinking worse case I can part it out, I doubt you'll get a deal through eBay, cars.com... ect, but through local ads and craigslist. Also you pretty much have to jump on it. The PO of my car had to get rid of it because of landlord issues.

This looks like the 79 that was for sale in the same area for $700 earlier this fall. Just a bit too far away for me.
