Bill??? Well Thank you. Of course I am very happy with it and I can tell you that for 18k I DEFINITELY scored! You say that as if you had the impression that I had regrets (???). But thank you just the same. I don't plan on waiting for my car to stop whistling, I will make it stop and when it is done I will urinate on the troublesome parts so they will never forget who the boss really is!
I will be getting a second 928 sometime soon, and I will be seeing all of you at SITM this year. Oh yes, your future IS that grim....

Bill, Iceman and Giovanni, I think you all are being a bit harsh on the car. Yes it needs some cosmetic work but the mechanicals have not been neglected and Steve has had it for 10 years now (kept in his garage) and he has driven it very little. Honestly those of you who would pass on an otherwise very nice 928 because someone covered the quarter panels with carpet indicates pretty wacky priorities. No one even knows if the the q.p.'s are even damaged. I think you do perspective buyers in the forum a disservice by going on and on about how much you dislike the car. As experienced 928 owners and consistent contributors to this forum I don't think you all appreciate how much weight your opinions carry with a lot of people on this forum. This car could be a really fantastic car for someone here. There was a long thread devoted to the my 89 S4 before I bought it and if I had listened to all the nit picking people in that thread then I would have missed out on a truly superior 928 at a very good price. Pretty much the same goes with the brown S4 I just bought despite all the people who didn't like the color. Now I would hope that EVERYONE would put more faith in their own views and less in what others think but I would be naive to think that people here who want to fit in to the group aren't effected by your criticisms. So I think it would be very nice if someone near the car would go see it and drive it in person and then give an unbiased report to the forum as I know for a fact that there are people here who want to know more about the car and might even buy it if someone knowledgeable were to give it the thumbs up by criteria that is more relevant than the covered quarter panels.

My black S4 was seen by several rennlisters and passed on as well. It did turn out to be a very good car with a long future ahead of it, just needing of some normal 928 maintenance. I'm such a nut that I have gone way beyond just maintenance, so more time and $ has been sucked up than necessary.

You always have to read between the lines.

I was just commenting that I think the white one is a lot nicer and a better buy. I know it's difficult to tell exactly what we mean sometimes with the few words we write here.

To me it is a disappointment to see something like this in a low mile car. If the panels were vinyl covered, they can almost always be straightended as is. If they were leather covered, they would need recovering, either with leather or vinyl after being straightened. This is the first time I've seen carpet applied to the Q panels and it really threw me. I try to be diplomatic here, but sometimes I fail at that.

Candleman,

It is a surprise that your are vouching for someone that you don't personally know and a car you have not personally seen just because you have spent 3 hours on the phone with the seller and that he was totally forthcoming of all the issues on the car? I understand if you know the owner and/or car but I am a little astonished in this particular case. Maybe its just me. Disclaimer: I am not on the internet to bulley anyone or make enemies but I stand behind my opinion on the carpeted rear quarters and buyer beware. On the other side the car may be a bargain, only the next owner will know.

That's why I would like someone nearby to go check it out and give their impressions.

IMNSHO the carpeted panels just don't look right in a 928...... Since the panels were warped to the point of being repaired, that tends to make me think it spent a bit of time in the sun, probably not in Springfield since it doesn't get that hot.....the cracked dash and pod also point to this..... however cracks and warped 1/4 panels are extremely common in 928's.....to the point that one that has perfect pod-dash-panels is extremely rare..unless its been restored.....I do have a perfect pod-dash, but my 1/4 panels are shrunk a bit.....one day I'll fix it...maybe this winter?

BUT on the good side, the sport seats look very nice....with minimal wear, so that is a good point...& again IMNSHO I like that color combo...it really doesn't photo well, but when you see it in person its stunning......

I didn't intend to bash this 928, or its owner......just my opinions of what I saw in the pics..... If I was local to this 928 I would go take a much more detailed look at it!

IMHO I like to read different opinions on cars, someone might see something I would miss. I would rather read alot of "Very expensive fix" "hoods not aligned","paint doesn't match","thats not factory","better check that out", than "cool color", "nice car", "wow......"

Of the 5 928's I looked at the one I bought was the least impressive in pictures but easily the best in person.

The big question for me would be why did such a low mileage, garaged car need to be repainted?

Bingo. I'm not bashing, but carpet on the QPs, repaint, motor mounts, some more paint work needed. Is the AC fully up? Do the vac pots all work? Lift struts, pod, dash cracks? I don't know, but it all adds up after a while. I do like the sport seats and 5 speed, but I can see why it's been for sale for quite a while. Plenty of fish in the sea, and not many Cassirot buyers out there. Maybe me, and a few chicks.

Can the odometer be easily disconnected on 928's? I looked at a 48,000 mile 88my last year that easily looked like it had 100,000 miles of wear and tear on it.
