Unhappy last night it was embrassing

For the very fist time.....

Last night I raced my friends "slow maro" camaro (6 cyclinder) on a open road and he woop my butt. We were doing about 115 mph. I had my foot to the metal and I just ran out of power. My porsche could not go any faster at 120 mph... I just saw my friend getting away from me and I couldn't catch up. His car is just a regular 6 cyclinder "stock". Is there something wrong with my car. I think I should have more power than 120 mph at least 145 mph. This is my first 928 I own. Is this common or is there something wrong with my car. Please help....

Don't be too hard on yourself for one thing. Also keep in mind that the later camaros have pretty good power - even for a six.

Back to your shark?. Time to go through your maintenance checklist.

Plugs
Plug Wires
Air Filter
Cap and Rotor
All Fluid Levels
Vacuum Lines

My curiousity?

Was it a stand still race or a roll on race?.

Did you use your gears or did you just floor it if it were a roll on?.

An Edited comment: It sounds like you may have another problem.

This weekend I just installed
Plugs
rotor and cap
oxygen sen..

I havent changed the air filter... and need to check the vaccums..

Is there any cut off limiter on the engine that stops it from going over 120 mph.

You would know if you hit the rev meter. The car will flat spot. AKA - Engine Kill and this only happens when you hit redline (in any gear)

I think you've got something wrong. I had an 82 928 some time ago. It was a stock automatic and would do 140 without a problem. I had no trouble with non Z28 Camaros and a host of others. Without specific symptoms it would be hard to say what it is.
I'd look for a good shop with a dyno in an attempt to get to the bottom of this, to say nothing of saving face. You should be able to walk away from even some Z28s at top end.

George,

Yes I do. SBC 350 LT1 with a GM Hot Cam, headers, Accel ignition, 28 Lb injectors, ported heads, intake, etc.
The 928 and LT1 is a wonderful combination.

The early 928 will easily do 140. IT will take a while to get past say 125, but until then, its just fine. I suggest adding a test pipe to see if you have clogged cats. If that does nothing, then a possible dyno run while checking fuel pressure and some other things might help. Just checking it while sitting there will not help. You have to recreat that load.

Thanks for all the suggestions... I will check the cats and take it from there. I was just depressed because the car would not get pass 120mph and needed to know if it was a common or is there a fix without upgrading it. Again, thank you....

One more thing which escaped my mind before. Check your throttle cable(s), if they are slacked by any means - your performance will suffer!.

I have an 82 auto which is fine running condition. Although it does not have the "nut's" to smoke the tires off the line, at 2800 rpms you can feel the car pull rather hard. If I hit it at 80 or 90 mph, there is no mistaking that the car leaves those numbers in a hurry. I have gotten to 135+ in a matter of seconds and you can feel the car still pulling.

120 top end and there is something wrong. You also have a 5 speed which doesn't give the auto lag, so you have a bit more direct power to the wheels. There is no way the camaro should have gotten the best of you...providing you know what you are doing.

Contrary to what some other 928 owners of the newers car will say, the OB's are not as slow as they would like to think. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

These cars are still performers in stock mode. Get her tuned up to the best she could be and I promise you, you will still have one fast car that will, out top end many newer sports cars. The older 928's are no slouch!
