Oil Pan sump screen a problem?

Hi Mike,
I love your disclaimer! I feel the same way. It always seems that when one designs & makes parts of their own & shares them with this list there's always someone to criticize it & say it won't work, even though you've done plenty of research & they've done none & have no mechanical engineering knowledge. It's never the people who know that do so. As we discussed before on the phone, it almost makes you want to keep your mods to yourself! So much for trying to improve the breed,......at our own expense I might add.

Mike, I am about to drop the pan on my '79. Does it come down straightforward after you remove all bolts and break the gasket bond ? I think I read something about the "guts"
hanging up on the screen, etc. Since you just did yours, can you clarify if there are any hidden issues, pointers. Thanks

The pan drops down a couple of inches. It's then left dangling because the attatchement thing on the end of the pickup tube wont fit through the hole in the screen. I then removed the 2-10mm(wrench) bolts holding the pickup the the block and the single allen screw(6mm wrench) where the tube goes into the block. You could alternately remove the thingy on the bottom I suppose, I could have pictured that little clamp not budging so I didn't even try.
The next question is whether to make any changes before reassembly. IMHO that screen is a poor design and I'd have a hard time reinstalling it on any car. It sounds like there's some consensus on that with Enzo and the others, hopefully there'll be some more recommendations on whether and what changes to make. I would guess that finding a later one-piece pickup tube and discarding the creen could be the ticket.
Hammer, It can be brutal at times but we have to hang in there. If you had never taken the time to organize the ATI damper buy I don't know what I would have done, thanks!

we did this with scots. just dumped the entire early model oil pickup thing, and installed the later single "cup" with integral screen of the later models. seems to be working.

Disclaimer: I like to design and make my own stuff because this is my dear 928 project and is a labor of love. Whatever I design and build is the result of that desire and is no indication of how I regard your friend's/mechanic's/whoever's product. If I were building a house I would probably make my own nails. If what I do bothers you feel free to ignore me and do your own thing.

I still post my progress & results, most seam to like the info and cheer me on. Once and a while I'm even called a liar.
Sway means well, he's just trying to help people avoid unnecessary shop time when something is already out there.
It's no different when I point out to people I would buy S4 spindles for a Brembo upgrade versus buying adaptors. Just my opinion, I like to encourage everyone to share theirs. We cannot be expected to like what everyone has to say. That doesn't mean we should hold back our ideas.

FYI, my 84 does not have the screen so the change was earlier. I would've guessed 81, but Brendan's experience refutes that. I don't remember the 4 tall dividers either, but that could just be mid-summer heat and garage fumes clouding my memory.

Enzo, I'm sure Sway didn't mean to be as harsh as he came across and is really just trying to promote a friend's product that he genuinely likes.
The disclaimer and comments by the others are because of past experiences and not anything in this thread. It's just the nature of a group like this, post a new product and others try to suggest fault, post a group buy and the critisisms seem to overshadow the thanks, heaven forbid anyone ever post Dynojet results and be promptly reminded that your accomplishment isn't to be enjoyed, it's really a lower number. It's just the nature of a big internet group and the positive outweighs the negative in the end.
I agree that we should all share our ideas and try to not be bothered by occasional negativity. It would be a shame to miss out on the ideas that Hammer, a4sfed' and other have. I hope everyone posts thier projects, they'll never know how much it's appreciated.
Count me in for the group toast

I wasn't talking about people "liking" my ideas. I couldn't care less if people approve of my ideas. I do things to please myself. As Mike confessed to, I probably over engineer every part I build. What I was talking about is people who chime in & say something won't work when they don't know which end of the screwdriver touches the screw. I'll always put my ideas out for examination in case someone whose opinion I respect (like Louie or Mike) has some interesting input. People shouldn't say anything in a post that they don't have the stones to say to your face.

Having met Sway, I can say he is just as passionate in person. He knows a lot and has strong opinions I respect. That doesn't mean I'll follow his advice, but I still like to hear it. Mike let me know when you have your system developed.

I was thinking 82 or 83, since I can vouch for an 81 and an early 82.

Like in so many times simple answer when part was changed is in Morehouse CD yearly changes documents. Based on attached text it was at beginning of '83 MY.

That is basically same setup in all 928 pans. Its far from being enough to be any kind of real solution.

I don't know what to think of those 4 walls, with the pickup in place it forms 4 independant quadrants. Maybe there's something to be gained from modifying or removing them, maybe the round wall of the pickup coul be modified or removed. I don't know, the pickup seems to have been designed to form those quadrants.
As soon as I bolt the pan back on this engine I'm going to get a labotomy to make room for other engine specs, anniversaries and birthdays
