Default Oil drain plug tapped for temp sender

I got a bug up my wazoo a while back about mounting an oil temp sensor but have been hesitant to ruin a new drain plug as my first drilling and tapping project. There was a guy on the 944 board a while back who had arranged a group buy on plugs he was modifying. He had none left but noted that the Subaru WRX uses the same drain plug. He sent me to

http://www.wrxtra.com/catalog/produc...8ef2a72492332e

So I ordered one ($15), it came super fast, and sure enough is the same as the 928 drain plug:

No affiliation, just thought I'd pass the data point along.

Can anything be done to add the magnet back in though?

Ive had mine running with a tapped plug for nearly 2years. Its really a nice thing to be able to see...especially if you track or run in hot climates. Mine is hooked up to a standard autometer type gauge. No issues at all. One of these days i will do it to the tranny pan also.

You can get the same effect by using a good 2-part epoxy and gluing a small rare earth magnet on the bottom of the tapped pan hole. I have the temp switch and added the RE magnet just for insurance. The RE magnets I use are 3/16" x 3/16" deep and are about 10-15 times stronger than the one in the old plug. You can even stick a few on the oil filter can if you want and transfer them with each oil change. They cost like like a quarter or something.

Why? You can get them at any Subaru dealer or parts supplier.

As an alternative, you can drill and tap one of the two block plugs right above the oil pressure sending unit; that's where I have mine on my racecar.

The 2 enemies of epoxy are UV light and heat. Most epoxies start to go soft at about 125 degrees F. That's why a lot of custom epoxy composite fabrications are painted a light color- it helps keep them cool.

There are some higher-temp ones, but you'd DEFINITELY want to look at their spec's first, BEFORE you go gluing a loose magnet into your engine! You want to see their heat deflection temperature (when they soften) and their maximum working temperature (when they fail).
