More pricey, Lindsey Racing sells one with the magnet in it: http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/944OILDP.html

as far as epoxy goes JB weld should hold a magnet to any place .
IIRC JB weld loses its bonding properties over 600F

+1. If JB Weld can stop an oil pan crack from leaking for years, it can definitely hold a magnet in the bottom of the pan.

JB Weld is good to 600 degrees? Wow I had no idea!

When I think of a "two part epoxy" I am reminded of the liquid varieties from my boatbuilding days. I made this boat from epoxy:

Has anyone installed one these tapped oil drain plugs with a temp sending unit on it?

As I have spent less than ten minutes total looking under my 928's during my ownership so far, I have a dumb question.... Does the sending unit extend downward towards the ground? If yes, doesn't it become more at risk for braking off and having a rapid loss of oil and pressure? If no, just say "You're a dummy Dan and here's why....".

Erik N. - that is nice boat. Looks like a Corsair design. Those trees and hills look like the Norcal area.

The drain plug does not face the ground, it faces towards the side of the car.

I used a less elegant solution, but effective. VDO Dipstick temp sender to a VDO gauge mounted near the dash.

It'd be nice to know when the oil is up to temp.

I'd like a plug drilled and tapped for a stock 928 coolant temp gauge sender (or a standard Bosch sender with the same specs w/o the idiot light).

A toggle under the pod would switch the input to the stock gauge. Maybe use a resistor to make the idiot light glow dimly to indicate oil temp is selected.

Thanks George. That looks great. What type of gauge do you have and where do you have it? I'd like to have one in my car but don't want it to be conspicuous.

How exciting is it to know the oil temp?

I can tell my oil temp by what the oil pressure is at idle. If it's 3 bar or less, I know the oil is warm enough to open her up.

I used a gauge from from Glowshift, not too expensive and includes a sender:

http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/white...ure-gauge.aspx

As for mounting, I tried to be inconspicuous, but I don't think I succeeded,
as shown in the Computer Diagnostic/GPS thread...

In the center panel, second one from the left (right above the LM-1).
A better place, if you don't need as many gauges, may be in the
ashtray behind the shifter or on the driver's side A-pillar.
