Dwayne, thanks for the great work and community service.
As for keeping the camera clean, maybe an underwater cover? Or just a supply of clear plastic bags - change bags when you change gloves.

Holy thread revival!!!! Can I use this write up to service half shaft CVs on an 86.5 ??
My outer boots are tearing and the tranny side boots are probably original as well... its time to do this... Thanks!

Yes, the procedure will apply to the 86.5. However, you will have an end cap on the transmission end of the half-shaft instead of the gaskets depicted in the write-up.

Thanks Dewayne!!! You are DA MAN!!!
I checked out my tranny/differential and the cover (if not the entire unit) is from an 85 - Its stamped with a small "85" and has the drain at the bottom of the cover typical of an older MY. It also has a drain plug at the front of the unit - not sure if that's typical of all MYs or not. Anyway, thanks for the heads up - I'll find out for sure if I need gaskets or end caps when I get in there...
Thanks again!

I have tried the plastic bag trick on steering rack boots as well. However, I found it easier to just use personal lubricant on the boot and simply push the boot over the rack fittings.

Next, attach the circlip. Here's the pliers I bought to work with these circlips, much better than trying to use the snap ring pliers!

Hello Mark,
I believe they are called "Special Retaining Clip Pliers". One vendor, Knipex, has them at this site:

There are several vendors that make these pliers but they are not as common as snap/circlip/retaining ring pliers.

Thanks Dwayne and others that have helped make these instructions available.
I have started this job on my '78 euro and would like to make a suggestion for those of us with the older half-shafts. Mine has CVs that can be disassembled both inboard and outboard... so if you are taking your shaft off the transmission and you see allan screws on the wheel end, you have the same thing as me. I would suggest loosening the wheel end allan screws before removal. I didn't do that, now I have the half-shaft on bench and I have to figure a way to hold it to loosen the wheel side allan screws.
Also on mine, you are supposed to remove the left side wheel to pull the half-shaft out through the wheel well, according to the WSM. I take it this is because a battery box support is in the way? Are the newer cars different? I lucked out, the left side boots have already been replaced and are in great shape. On the right side both were ripped open.
