What did I learn? Jobs more than I could ever handle...must save $$ to have Greg do it. I just had my car at Precision for an oil change that led to new tie rods, Greg noticed that my boots are getting tothe point where in 6 months or so they will likely need to be replaced. Nice work...that car will be brand new when you get done with it.

2. Install socket head bolts on transmission end
(axle shaft flange surfaces must not have grease).

Okay this made me nervous so I looked it up.....42-19 in the WSM specified this.....it doesn't say anything about anti seize on the bolts themselves...just not to have exposed grease on the part that spins so it won't fling all over the place! Assuming I am reading "flange" correctly?

Hi Brian,
You are right, I could not find anything either in my research about using anti-seize on the Allen bolts at the transmission flange (either in the WSM or the posts on Nichols). I believe the WSM intended the bolts to go in dry. It seems to be more of a personal choice to use Threadlocker on these bolts or not.

As far as "axle shaft flange surfaces must not have grease", I took this to mean you should wipe off any grease from the MATING surfaces (i.e., clean the grease off the mating surface of the flange on the axle, as well as the mating surface of the flange at the transmission and the flat surfaces of the CV joint that mates with these flanges. Hope this helps.

Hello Shawn,
I couldn't figure out how to post the edited pic you asked about to the private message so I've posted the pics to the original thread.

The grooves you asked about are pointed to by the green arrows in the following pics. When re-assembling the joint, the side with the groove indicated by the arrow is to be installed facing inward toward the transmission.

Same shot here when the axle is installed in the joint. In addition, the outer joint housing had a groove (indicated by the left green arrow) and it is also oriented to be closest to the transmission. This was the same orientation I noted when I disassembled the joint.

Hope this helps....let me know if you have any questions.

Nice write-up, Dwayne!

I agree with others -- it's not easy to get pics of this job and keep the camera clean!

Dwayne,

Another great piece of work from you. Have you ever thought of continuing to do this and compiling your work into a book?

I would certainly buy a copy from you!

I talked to Steve Cataneo a few days ago he suggested to use blue thread locker on the CV bolts, I added it the ones on my 84 Euro and then torqued the bolts per WSM

Thanks Dwayne, Bill.

This is my next project on the list and couldn't ask for a better guide.

Dwayne:

Very nice write up and an awesome job working on such a messy project.

My '94 GTS had a torn boot and I just took it to the local shop for repairs, after ordering and receiving the rebuild kits from 928 Specialists. I only had two days from the time parts arrived and a DE event, so I took the easy way out.

Congrats.

Dude...you're awesome. Just the fact that you take the time to research, well document as you do the job and spend time on the write up is splendid. I did the same thing when I had my first 928 and found that it can be taxing to do this on a regular basis, so I eventually stopped. I applaud your efforts to continually keep documenting. Bravo!
