Question Replacement speakers

Hi all,
I purchased my car with the small door speakers missing. All the other speakers are replaced with Kenwood items. Does anyone know if there are any manufacturers making speakers small enough to replace the small ones I'm missing ? I don't really want to butcher the doors to try and fit bigger ones ?
Thanks

I would just check at a car stereo specialty store. If you find a good one they will treat you right.

Linus,

I want my car to stay fairly stock so I've been considering Blaupunkt speakers sold by Tweeks. They carry an extensive range of sizes for almost every model of Porsche. Their catalog claims that the "speakers are made to fit your Porsche" and that "all speakers bolt-on with easy installation and no modifications".

I haven't spoken to Tweeks about the fit or quality.

I don't know the details of your installation so here's all they list for the 928:

928S 79-83 3-1/2"
928S 84-85 4"
928S 84-85 6-1/2"
928S4 87-93 4" door
928S4 87-93 1" tweeter door
928S4 87-93 6-1/2" sides
928S4 87-93 4" rear shelves

I noticed that the 86 is conspicuously absent from the list.

Their web site is pretty weak so you have get their catalog
or call them at 1-888-489-3357.

Maybe someone out there has tried them?

If you give them a try, I'd love to hear your opinion.

Jensen makes direct replacements for many speakers and mine sound great in my boat. I even installed a set in the wall of my rec. room for rear channel surround and the sound as good as the Bose system in the family room.

If you are look for better sound quality try Boston Acoustics....The have a set of speakers with a cross over that fit perfectly in the doors and sound great.

About the speacker sizes: my '79 has 4x6" speakers all around (the original Blaupunkts), not 3.5" speakers. The mounting depth is ridiculously shallow however; something like 1.3" at the center.

Not sure that your 84 and my 87 share the same size tweeter sizes, but...

When I refurbished my interior a couple of years back - I upgraded all of the speakers to Alpine units. The tweeters in the doors were the most difficult IMHO.

Alpine makes a tweeter about the same size - but I had to cut out the ould unit and use a Dremel Tool to modify the housing to accept the new Alpine unit. Took about an hour each side as I recall.

Does anyone know of a drop in replacement for the 4" S4 door speaker? I'm looking for just a midrange replacement, not a two-way.

For the door speakers I think that there is an issue with the depth. Apparently you cannot fit speakers that are any deeper than 2 inches. I am about to do this on my car and have been doing some research. This is explained better in some older posts you can find using the search function.

I am probably going to use MB Quart speakers. Of more interest to me is amps/locations. The stock amp is pretty small and a new amp will probably not fit into the same space. I have been looking for alternate spots and the tray under the glove box is probably the only choice!

Anybody know of any real small amps or other spots for a big amp (except the rear deck!!)

Adam-

I replaced my speakers all the way around using Alpine units. Had to modify the 2 way housing by drilling holes in the original mounts 45 degrees offset. Not a biggy - but no issues with depth.

Jay,

Can you provide the specific model numbers of the Alpines you used?

For a small amp, I would look at Blaupunkt's "T-chip" amps. They are smaller and run much cooler that the old style "Class A/B" amps. They run so cool that they are encased in plastic, which you could remove for an even tighter fit.

Other manf. have the same or similar type products.
