If you want a fast track car, why would you want a heavy S4?

Erik, I think you missed the key term:
Once stripped, there's no appreciable weight-savings amongst the various 928 models. Plus, mod-for-mod, there's more horsepower to be had in S4+ engines.

I have also been dabbling with the idea of building a track car just for fun on trackdays.
Keeping my eyes open for an OB though. Sunroof delete, crappy looking inside and out (since its all coming out anyway). Motor in reasonable condition (meaning not rusted to a stop). I can fix all the other crap.
Basically, a parts car that has all the major components in place.
5-speed of course......
Cheers

The reason I was thinking S4 is simply because I already have an S4. Advantages: I have worked on my S4, am familar with most of its components, would have a spare part for anything, parts can be swaped from one car to another to help with diagnosis, I could keep one roadworthy at all times, etc. That would be my first choice but I'm open to other ideas.
I've tracked my S4 a few times and loved it but I took it easy as I am not sure how much I want to beat on it in the future. A dedicated track car would alow me to experiment a bit more and start to challenge myself.
That''s my thinking.

John V.'s monster stroker and other tracked prepped 928s live in PCA GT2S.
And look what Mark Kibort just did with a gutted 928S4...

Why would anyone want to race a 928? You're just gonna blow the engine. Unless your ready to sink an additional 20 grand into building a stroker. The only reason Kibort gets away with it, is because he has the finesse to never exceed 5000 rpm's and has the specially built titanium engine that was designed for Al Holberts record setting run.
